How postal zones led to ZIP codes. Why I like to put a hyphen in "re-enter." How "bougie," which today has a negative connotation, came from an older word that meant simply "middle class."

768 - Why Aren't We 'Whelmed'? And Cabin 'Fever,' Anyone?

We know we can be overwhelmed. Why aren't we ever just whelmed? Also, maybe it was having cabin fever that made us start thinking about all the English idioms that use the word "fever."

MarwaSuraj ,

English made fun 😱

Mignon Fogarty puts an exciting spin on the blurred lines we all happen to hate about the English language; it feels like exposure therapy for my phobia.

Grammar Girl has such a lovely and lively voice; sometimes I forget to fast forward the ads. Since discovering her educational sessions, I have been officially addicted.

Absolutely worthwhile!

Long time favourite podcast

....notice the Canadian(British) spelling of favourite. I have been listening to this podcast since about episode 25. I always look forward to it showing up in my feed. Over the years I have enjoyed her concise but complete explanations of grammatical terms and devices, especially those I had never thought to try identify. The explanations are clear enough to be understood by someone for whom English is a 2nd or 3rd or 4th language. I enjoy her exploration of regional accents and variations in how we speak. And...I always look forward to the ongoing adventures of Aardvark!

Fantatastic podcast for people who speak english as a second language

Hi, I love your podcast and I have been listening to it for over 4 years.

I am from Colombia and English is my second language.

I wonder if you could comment on the word "America" when you are referring to the people of the United States. As a Colombian citizen I KNOW that me too, I am American, but at the same time I feel excluded when a person from the US says the word America. (You too, you use the term America quite often as well).

Is it correct that The United Estates have appropriated this word for themselves while excluding Canadians and everything from Mexico to Patagonia?

It would be great if you talk about this in one of your podcasts...
