How to Be a Girl is an audio podcast I produce about life with my six-year-old transgender daughter. It stars the two of us -- a single mom and a six-year-old "girl with a penis" -- as we attempt together to sort out just what it means to be a girl.

Important

I feel like this is the important kind of podcast that people need to be listening to. There’s so much ignorance and hate in this world and it matters so much to hear the voices of people like Marlo and her daughter and hear their story.

Just wonderful

I listen to this podcast with my daughters (11&7) and we so thoroughly enjoy it. They love hearing your daughter’s voice and following along as she grows. Thank you so much for all your work on this podcast and for all the love for your daughter. You are lucky to have each other and we are lucky to have found your story.

Two-Spirit

Besides the fine craft with the flow of the mechanics of this podcast, the content is quite touching. I’m just at the part where dad is in the podcast. I put out a call on Facebook for folks to recommend their favourite podcast and someone recommended this one. I’m so glad. I have four children & though I don’t think any of them are transgendered (they are older teens except for my 15 month old), the teens have friends who are.

I consider myself as someone who is an active learner about gender issues, particularly because in our Cree/Métis life in community ceremonies and events, two-spirit people are revered. I grew up with acceptance so learning about the term “trans” was not hard for me to understand because we had “trans” folks growing up - we just never really addressed it. They just were who they were and had special roles to fulfill in our worlds. I would highly recommend taking your daughter to a First Nations/Native American pow wow, especially two-spirit pow wows.

Thank-you for taking all the time to put the podcast together. Thank-you for paving the way for everyone’s understanding of how your family has evolved throughout your journeys. And thank-you for sharing with us, your love for your daughter.
