Japanese with Kanako Kanako

みなさんこんにちは、かなこです！今日のシャドーイングは「他動詞と自動詞」です。今回のPodcastは、Michaelさんの提供でお送りします。

Hi everyone, it’s Kanako. Today’s shadowing is “transitive verbs and intransitive verbs”.

 

The verbs describing situations in which human beings act on things are called “transitive verbs”.

 

On the other hand, the verbs describing changes that things or people undergo are called “intransitive verbs”.

 

For instance, if I put sugar in the coffee, it’s transitive but if there’s sugar in the coffee already, it’s intransitive.

I boiled water. お湯を沸かしました。

The water boiled. お湯が沸きました。

I'll turn the lights on. 電気をつけます。

The lights will turn on. 電気がつきます。

I turned off the TV. テレビを消しました。

The TV went off. テレビが消えました。

I dropped a cup on the floor. コップを床に落としました。

The cup fell on the floor. コップが床に落ちました。

I stained my clothes. 服を汚しました。

My clothes got dirty. 服が汚れました。

To describe an event after which another thing happens, you can use the Te-form of a verb + “から”.

 

For instance, if you were to say “After taking a shower, I'm going to have a beer.” you can say, “シャワーを浴びてから、ビールを飲みます”.

I stop by a convenience store and then go to
the office. コンビニに寄ってから、会社に行きます。

I stretch and then I exercise. ストレッチしてから、運動します。

After cleaning my room, I'm going on a trip. 部屋を掃除してから、旅行に行きます。

I work after drinking coffee. コーヒーを飲んでから、仕事します。

I close the windows and then I go out. 窓を閉めてから、出かけます。

After brushing my teeth, I go to bed. 歯を磨いてから、寝ます。

I buy cakes and then go to my friend's house. ケーキを買ってから、友達の家(いえ)に行きます。

After taking a walk, I eat breakfast. 散歩してから、朝ごはんを食べます。

I will go to Japan after studying Japanese. 日本語を勉強してから、日本に行きます。

I'll clean up the kitchen and then cook. キッチンを片付けてから、料理します。

After reading a book, I go to bed. 本を読んでから、寝ます。

After doing my homework, I play video games. 宿題をしてから、ゲームします。

Hi everyone, it’s Kanako. Today’s shadowing is “B before A.”

 

You can use the present tense short form and前に to describe the event before which something happens. “前に” always follows the verb short form in the present tense even it happened in the past.

 

For instance, if you were to say “I studied a lot before taking the exam.” you can say, “試験を受ける前に、たくさん勉強しました。”.

The sentence structure “SubjectはNounみたいです” expresses the idea that something or someone resembles the thing or the person described by the noun.

 

For instance, if it is still winter, but the day is warm like spring, you can say, “今日は春みたいです。”.
