A big thank you to Oregon State University’s Professor Chris Nichols for chatting with us about the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic. You can read his fantastic Tweetstorm on the epidemic HERE, and read his Washington Port article HERE.

DKC’s DoubleDub article on the epidemic in Portland can be found HERE.

And be sure to check out the Infuenza Encyclopedia HERE!

KAOH Special: Sometimes a Great Notion Movie Road Tour

KAOH Special: Sometimes a Great Notion Movie Road Tour

In which we learn that no amount of crummy Washington beer will bring back old-timey Oregon.

Oregon Film will be showing the movie, a 35mm print, at the Hollywood Theater on September 10th, 2018 at 7:30pm. It’s not everyday that you get to see Sometimes a Great Notion on the big screen, so be sure to come check it out! More details about the viewing can be found HERE.

Today’s podcast was brought to you by our Sometimes a Great Notion Road Trip sponsors: Oregon Film, Water Avenue Coffee, Bull Run Distilling and Great Notion Brewing!  They help support Kick Ass Oregon History, so you should support them! Buy their quality Oregon products, over and over and over again.

We’d also like to thank Matthew Cowan at the Oregon Historical Society for his assistance with this program. Shawn Levy’s book can be found right here.

KAOH Special Report: Paint Your Wagon at 50

KAOH Special Report: Paint Your Wagon at 50

In which we learn that the view is the best part of the movie.

A HUGE THANK YOU to this podcast’s sponsors – Oregon Film, Dogwood Distilling, pFriem Beer, Trailhead Coffee, and the Geiser Grand Hotel in Baker City. Thanks to Sara Anson Vaux for her insight on Clint Eastwood. Thank you to Matthew Cowan of OHS (who says that he misspoke on the tape, and PYW was filmed on 35mm, and blown up to 70mm).

Here are our photos of the film set. Here is a trailer for Paint Your Wagon, and here is the Simpson’s version of the film.

***EDIT! Our November 2017 viewing at the Hollywood Theater in Portland had some great press, including KATU, KPTV 12, and one of the selected events of the week from the Portland Mercury! We hope to see you at the Hollywood on 11/16/2017. We hear tell that LEE MARVIN’s PANTS will be on display! Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the Baker Heritage Museum.

KAOH Halloween Special: Dave Campell, Kell’s Ghost

KAOH Halloween Special: Dave Campell, Kell’s Ghost

In which we learn that Portland celebrity ghosts can haunt where ever they fucking well choose.

A big thank you to Katie Montana Jordan, Barney Blaylock (and here’s a link to his book on Oregon Prizefighters), Johnny Ash at Kells and Rose and Lester. This is Michelle DeVona’s Haunted Portland Restaurants post.

Here’s a photo of Dave Campbell the fighter in about 1885 (thanks to OHS!).

This is the #Portland Firefighters Park on West 18th and Burnside. It honors the 36 PFB members that died keeping this city safe. The bust features Chief Dave Campbell, who died in the Union Oil Depot fire on the east side of the river in 1911. I imagine this park was quite nice at some point, but now it is full of trash and wet, discarded blankets- orange syringe caps littered about. Campbell and his interesting life (and afterlife too??) are the subjects of this year's KAOH #halloween special #podcast- which takes place @kellsportland. It drops on Wednesday, and we hope you'll check it out!
