Interview With "Downhill" Directors & Writers Nat Faxon & Jim Rash

Interview With "Downhill" Directors & Writers Nat Faxon & Jim Rash

Nat Faxon & Jim Rash are Academy Award winning screenwriters for the 2011 film "The Descendants." They made their co-directing debut together with the hit indie film "The Way Way Back." And now, they are back again writing and directing the American remake of the 2014 Swedish film "Force Majeure," now titled "Downhill" starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus & Will Ferrell. Nat and Jim were kind enough to talk to me about their reasoning for the remake, their process of co-writing with "Succession" creator Jesse Armstrong, working with the cast, the differences between this version and the original and more. Take a listen down below.

A+ Efforts from the NBP Team

I’ve been listening to this team of intelligent and thoughtful movie fans since the start of 2019 and I cannot recommend them enough for anyone with a passion in movies. From a weekly podcast discussing the current events in film to spotlighting the new films of that week with its own extensive review from members of the Next Best Picture team, this is a community that is hard not to fall in love with. There are laughs, agony, happiness, dismay, and so many emotions from these people and it’s the passion that you can hear that makes this team of movie buffs so addicting. Oscar season is especially fun but even when it’s not award season there’s lots of interesting things on the horizon from this team. Can’t wait to keep listening. Much appreciation from Canada!

Dull and derivative

It pains me to report that this movie podcast is not worth listening to at all. They spend the first 15 minutes reading pointless, readily available stats about the film (such as its score on Rotten Tomatoes), and even play the audio of the extended, two minute trailer. Talk about filler.

When they finally get to discussion the film, surprise surprise, turns out they all have exactly the same perspective and they go around in a circle repeating what the last guy said until the episode is over. The entire time they don’t offer a shred of analysis, even during a review with spoilers. They just gush about how the movie made them “feel.”

If that sounds good to you, then by all means listen to this show. But if you’re looking for a podcast featuring smart people with contrasting perspectives, this ain’t it.

Great stuff!

This is my go-to podcast for all the latest and greatest movie info! I like how the discussions and film reviews have the "Oscar Potential" aspect. You and your entire team are doing an amazing job, Matt!
