Ralph Appelbaum Associates

Phillip Tefft has planned, designed and developed museums, exhibitions, educational environments and cultural attractions with RAA’s New York and London offices for over 20 years.  After developing projects in New York during the 1990s, Mr Tefft established RAA’s London studio in 2000, which today comprises a multidisciplinary staff of 35 architects, designers, artists, writers and administrators.

Phillip Tefft first joined Ralph Appelbaum Associates in 1988 after working with leading New York Architects IM Pei, Steven Holl and Peter Eisenman. With RAA in New York, Mr Tefft assisted in exhibitions development for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and directed the architectural planning and design of The Newseum in Arlington, Virginia.  He masterplanned large-scale exhibitions for the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, interactive installations for The Adler Planetarium, and led the design team on RAA’s winning competition submittal for the National Museum of Prehistory in Taiwan.

As Director of RAA UK, Mr Tefft has recently led the development of the Culloden Battlefield Memorial Project in Inverness; The Braid, the largest recent cultural project in Northern Ireland; the award-winning London Transport Museum in Covent Garden; and the advanced media-led UAE Expo project in Shanghai.  He is also currently leading the exhibitions development for the major renovation of 16 permanent galleries at the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh; complete renovations to The Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter; the Bahrain National Charter Monument for the Royal Court of Bahrain; a feasibility study for a very large cultural attraction in Dubai for a leading UK national museum; and an interpretative feasibility study for a Peace building and Conflict Resolution Centre at the Maze prison, Northern Ireland.

During 12 years of practice in London, Mr Tefft has assembled a talented and experienced senior staff, and the practice is increasingly called upon to act as lead consultants for the development of significant destinations and attractions, such as the Great Hall at the National Railway Museum in York, and ‘Oculus - An Eye into St Paul’s’, a dramatic new media installation at St Paul’s Cathedral, London.

Mr Tefft holds a Master’s degree from the Columbia University School of Architecture, is a registered architect in the state of New York, and is a member of the Architectural Association in London.  He has lectured at Central St Martins College of Art and is currently a student mentor for csm’s graduate course in Narrative Environment Design.

Statement
Museums, and their collections of objects and ideas, are increasingly understood as dynamic forums for public debate stimulated by extraordinary experiences. As scenographers, we are continually searching the triggers for constructive discourse and discovery.  Our task is to reveal the evolution of aesthetic, intellectual, and scientific accomplishment, drawing upon the past and inspiring the imaginations of present and future generations.
