America's Historic Triangle: The Best Of Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg, Virginia

Living history can be informative and fun. And visiting the early settlements and battlefields of America's Historic Triangle -- Jamestown, Yorktown and WIlliamsburg -- offers both.

Beyond learning and better understanding the  past, there are the modern pleasures of dining, shopping and recreating. Victoria Cimino, CEO of Visit Williamsburg, takes us along.

We begin with Jamestown, the earliest settlement. Go on to Yorktown, where the culminating battle of the American Revolution took place.  And then Colonial Williamsburg, the world's largest living history museum.

And we end, of course, with Victoria's special memory of Virginia's Historic Triangle.

Parks Of The World: Reinventing And Reclaiming Neglected Spaces -- For The 21st Century

Parks Of The World: Reinventing And Reclaiming Neglected Spaces -- For The 21st Century

We are in the midst of a worldwide golden age of park creation, and featured in this episode are powerful examples. This recent surge of park development offers us much to celebrate.  Parks are being designed as proactive, dynamic green spaces.

Our guests, Victoria Newhouse and Alex Pisha,  are the authors of Parks of the 21st century: Reinventing Landscapes, Reclaimed Territories.

They discuss how neglected places have become glorious public parkland. Parks are becoming reinvented and reclaimed from former railroad beds, highway caps, former airports, former industrial plants, former quarries, former strongholds.

Victoria and Alex discuss parks they especially love in China, the Netherlands and other countries, and the future of parks, including ways they will help combat climate change.

We end, as usual, with our guests' special travel memories.

Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket: Charming Massachusetts Getaways

From the Cape Cod peninsula to the nearby islands of  Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, Massachusetts offers some of the most charming towns and activities in the U.S. And Leon Bolivar, a true Cape Codder, leads us along the way.

We start on the Cape, discussing places to go and things to do in and around Falmouth, Sandwich, Hyannis, Yarmouth, Dennis, Chatham and Provincetown. Then talk about Cape Cod pastimes including baseball, golf, croquet and whale watching.
Food and drink faves include  clams, oysters and lobsters -- including lobster ice cream! (With local potato chips, and maybe a cranberry Cape Codder.)
We  go on to Martha's Vineyard -- what to see and do, in and around the cliffs and beaches from  Oak Bluffs to Edgartown. And then, Nantucket -- what to see and do on this extremely charming little island filled with whaling history and cobblestone streets.
Lea offers a limerick she adapted about Nantucket. And Leon ends with his special memory.

Trains World-Wide: From Eurail To Luxury Journeys, Including The Venice Simplon Orient Express

Trains World-Wide: From Eurail To Luxury Journeys, Including The Venice Simplon Orient Express

Today's trains are not only a part of the green "slow travel" movement, they can be ultra-fast  and super deluxe. Lea and Guest Yi Ding, a Eurail executive, share train tips and trips, from speedy, efficient Eurail to the luxury private train tours of the world. Riding the rails proves it's the journey, not just the destination.

We first discuss all about  Eurail, which connects Europe through trains and ferries. We offer tips, scheduling, scenic routes, night trains and ferry passes.

Lea then describes 14 private trains focused on luxury, with reclaimed vintage carriage cars, fine dining and luxury bedding only a part of the ride:  the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, the Royal Canadian Pacific, the Palace on Wheels, The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express, the Belmond Hiram Bingham, Inca Rail, Belmond Andean Explorer, Belmond Royal Scotsman, the Transcantabrico Classico, The  Pride of Africa Rovos Rail, The Palace on Wheels, the Belmond Eastern & Oriental Express, The Belmond English panel, The Ghan and The Rocky Mountaineer.
And of course, we end with a special memory of a train ride.
