The elephant named Old Bet had toured throughout New England for eight years before a jealous farmer named Daniel Davis gunned her down as she approached the town of Alfred. Old Bet was part of one of America’s earliest circuses, and if not for the tiny memorial along Route 4, her legend may be lost forever. This episode first aired April 1, 2021.

Customer Reviews
Straight to the point. Funny and when informative.
Living in Quebec City (2 hours away from beautiful Maine), I got hooked after just one episode. Not too long, funny and informative, NEL reminded me of how much local legends are part of the patchwork that is our common history. We share a lot of things (both hosts have French last names), and the casual, natural delivery of the 2 friendly hosts is pretty contagious. I also like the map app. That’s why I’m a Patreon. Cheers to another 200!🤟
