Finding Eurovision Day Six: The Language of Eurovision

Finding Eurovision Day Six: The Language of Eurovision

Eurovision is first and foremost a songwriting contest and language plays a huge part in that. Should the song be in English? The countries native language or maybe a mix of the two? Rat joins me on this episode to talk about Norway's 2019 entry Spirit in the Sky by Keiino, jojking, and linguistics.  Does adding an ethnic slant to the song through a native language, give it a leg up in the popular vote?
Note: Norway grabbed 291 votes from the public, 30 points more than the winner Duncan Lawrence.
Track listing: Keiino - A Spirit in the Sky (Norway: 2019) Jamala - 1944 (Ukraine: 2016) In Corpore Sano - Konstrakta (Serbia: 2019) Soldi - Mahmood (Italy: 2019) Finding Eurovision is a 7-part podcast series about the Eurovision Song Contest and the music from a group of friends who watch it. #findingesc

Finding Eurovision Day Five: Growing Up With Eurovision

Finding Eurovision Day Five: Growing Up With Eurovision

Come in and chat, Acidica has some stories about growing up with Eurovision on TV (even on the news!) and how they fell both in and out of love with the song contest while growing up in Sweden. After all, as they say in the episode, Eurovision is religion in Sweden.
While this episode isn't all positives, there's plenty of good music.
I say good because, well, let's face it, the songs over the years haven't been all bangers. This episode has a lot of music and most of it Acidica was kind enough to recommend and give a little backstory on it.
Track listing: 1. Waterloo - ABBA (Sweden: 1974)
    2. Charlotte Nilsson - Take Me To Your Heaven (Sweden: 1999)
    3. Sunstroke Project & Olia Tira - Run Away (Moldova: 2010)
    4. Sébastian Tellier - Divine (France: 2008)

    10. Grotesco - Tingeliin (Tingeling russian base-lovers remix) (Melodifestivalen: 2009)
Extra show notes from Acidica!  Carola - Fångad av en Stormvind (Sweden:1991)
We won with this in Italy 1991. Fun fact, until Måneskin, Italy hadn't won since 1990 when they hosted this competition where Sweden won!
Ping Pong - Sameyakh (Israel: 2000)
    Be happy...
AWZ - Vizlát nyár (Hungary: 2018)

Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah (Finland 2006)
Pirates of the Sea - Wolves of the Sea (Latvia: 2008)
As the song goes on, fewer and fewer mics are on

Finding Eurovision Day Four: The Technical Side

The Technical Side of Eurovision Cue lights, sound, cameras! It's time to get to the technical side of things!
Day four takes a peek behind the scenes and behind the enormous curtain that is behind the scenes of Eurovision. Michael joins me to dazzle with technical facts (how many lights?!) and to uncover the wonder of frequencies.
If you enjoy Eurovision, you'll enjoy learning how it becomes more than just people singing onstage.
This is one of the documentaries that Michael mentions in the podcast.

This episode focuses on representation at Eurovision, how it attracts queer fans, two different types of drag and the idea of seeing yourself on stage. How important is it to see different walks of life in a song contest?

I’m not a punk fan but Kat has introduced me to so many new bands and genres. Her interview style is informative and informal. She gets out of the way of her guests and lets them be themselves.
