10 episodes

New York City, 1973. Bob Guccione, the founder of the men’s magazine Penthouse, is about to drop his latest project, and it’s not quite what anyone is expecting. Enter Viva, an erotic magazine for women published by a porn king but staffed by – drumroll – a bunch of feminist writers and editors. Viva features groundbreaking full-frontal male nudes, writing by feminist icons like Betty Friedan, and profiles of literary legends like Maya Angelou. Its cover stars include Bianca Jagger and Shelley Duvall. Anna Wintour is even Viva’s fashion editor at one point. But what is originally conceived as a high-end, progressive, sexual utopia for women… doesn't quite turn out that way.

Stiffed is an Original Series from Crooked Media and iHeartPodcasts. You can listen to all 8 episodes out now, wherever you get your podcasts.

Introducing: Dreamtown: The Story of Adelanto

What happens when a city on the verge of collapse tries to reinvent itself? How much will it cost? Who will pay the price? Reporter David Weinberg spent years following one city in California’s Mojave desert as it tried to transform itself from a city of prisons to a city of pot. And it worked…for a while. Until it, spectacularly, didn’t. From Crooked Media, this is Dreamtown: The Story of Adelanto. Listen to Dreamtown: The Story of Adelanto starting June 7th, wherever you get your podcasts.

Good content. An astonishing number of ads.

Generally speaking, I love Crooked Media content, and have been a devoted listener to PSTW, PSA and Lovett or Leave It for years. I haven’t even minded the increase in ads on the flagship podcasts because they do their best to make them funny.

And this podcast is not exception, content-wise: It’s a great topic, it’s well-researched, we’ll-written and well-produced.

But the sheer number, duration and repetitiveness of the ad breaks in Stiffed is unbelievable. I’ve only listened to 3 episodes so far and I can already pretty much recite the ads word for word, since I’m hearing them at least 3 times each, per episode. And the episodes are only 30 minutes long!

I know the iHeart overlords are stern taskmasters who don’t mind rendering the podcasts in their stable virtually unlistenable due to ad breaks, but holy geez I thought Crooked had more influence - like I thought they could insist on fewer ad breaks by demonstrating they could generate more revenue per ad (“because we’re known for quality, not like those slapped-together Wondery podcasts”).

Anyhow, if you plan to listen to this, do yourself a favour and make sure you’ve got your hands free to fast forward past 3 minutes of ads for every 6 minutes of content.

Obscene amount of ads

So many cringey ads that I can’t even bear to listen to it.

Astonishing amount of ads

I was very interested in this podcast and the topic story telling was great. However I couldn’t listen past three episodes because the amount of ads repetitive and long were incredible. I couldn’t even stay focused on the story because of how frequent the ads were. I understand the need for and appreciate and respect ads for free content but the content ad ratio was too much.
