Evolving Beyond Traditional Masculine Ideology W/ Mark Winkler

Evolving Beyond Traditional Masculine Ideology W/ Mark Winkler

A Conversation Between Author, Mark Winkler and Dr. John Schinnerer

This episode is an attempt to provide a way forward through the increasingly divisive topic of traditional masculine ideology (i.e., those who subscribe to the ideas that men shouldn't feel, women belong in the kitchen, women are sexual conquests men should be hypersexual, men are homophobic, men who don't fight back are weak, gay men are not 'real men', men should use violence to get respect). Research shows that men who strongly endorse these traditional beliefs are more likely to feel depressed, are less satisfied in their romantic relationships (as are their partners), tend to be angrier, are more violent towards others and are more psychologically rigid. This episode is an effort to invite men to examine their ideas about what it means to be a man...with curiosity and nonjudgmental...to truly look at what parts of it work for them and which pieces need some editing.

The Evolved Caveman is committed to helping men evolve beyond caveman status.

Balancing Military Special Forces With Performing Arts

Balancing Military Special Forces With Performing Arts

When he was a young man, Kon was drafted into the special forces in the Air Force in his native Greece. He also loved performing arts and dance. Impressively, he did both simultaneously. This part of Kon’s story really interested me in terms of how he balanced the masculine with the feminine.

How did Kon balance military, antiterrorism work (i.e., more stereotypically masculine) during the day with dance tights (i.e., more stereotypically feminine) at night?

What strengths did Kon pull out of this unique set of experiences? Toughness? Emotional IQ? Communication? A thick skin? Adaptability?

One of the hallmarks of mental health is flexibility of thought. How did Kon’s early experiences fuel his cognitive flexibility?

The top tools to navigate a crisis (which we are all in due to COVID).

What are some of the most needed attributes for effective titans of trade, or leaders in business?

What is your best piece of advice for other men who may be less far along in their journey?

    About Kon
Konstantinos Apostolopoulos is the Founder & CEO of Fresh Biz Solutions, a Human Capital Management consulting group that provides performance improvement and training solutions to help organizations develop their people, improve business results, and reap the benefits of a comprehensive Talent Management strategy. Maneuvering Manhood In The Army: Leadership, PTSD, and Spirituality

Maneuvering Manhood In The Army: Leadership, PTSD, and Spirituality

Watching Band of Brothers inspired Cameron Harman to volunteer for the U.S. Army. He wound up in the Afghanistan war. This is his story.

How does one go from solider to PTSD to spiritual student?

Is it necessary to be a mean, out-of-control a*****e to be respected as a leader in the military?

What motivates people better — fear or love?

To what extent is fear a necessary motivator in battle?

To what extent is physical strength needed to be masculine? Is it so important that steroids are a viable option?

What does PTSD look like/sound like/feel like?

The impact of insults on our masculinity and how easily manipulated we are by them (e.g., Cam wanted to get a brain scan for his traumatic brain injury due to an IED. His C.O.’s response, “Ok bitch boy, you go have the crazy doctors check you out!”).

What sort of psychological damage do we inflict on others when our masculinity and mental health are out of whack?

The big idea that depression in men comes out as irritability or alexithymia (i.e., the inability to name what you are feeling).

Cameron Harman, veteran of the U.S army and Afghanistan war. After service over seas he suffered from PTSD. He tried therapy and counseling both in the military and out. When he hit rock bottom, he began to study Buddhism and spirituality. He deeply connected to the texts and teachings. By practicing meditation and changing his perceptions, he healed my PTSD. His healing changed the way he sees the world. Hermit_Radio (podcast) was a way to give back to the world by sharing his knowledge. He now lives life with two principles: love everyone and tell the truth.
