We take famous movies and play through them as if they were a role playing game. Instead of all those pesky writers carefully crafting a plot, we let the dice decide and go from there. Inevitably it all goes completely off the rails.

With Paulo Quiros, Jocelyn Vammer, Scott Aiello, Jon Miller, Pitr Strait and Carolyn Faye Kramer.

My favourite podcast.

I’ve spent lots of long walks and lonely nights listening to The Film Reroll. New episodes are one of the few things I look forward too.

Great roleplay even for new listeners

The Film Reroll is role-playing podcast similar to a Dungeons and Dragons podcast but played within a previously existing movie universe. The first episode: “Back to the Future 2” was released December 4, 2015 and the podcast still runs today averaging 2-3 episodes per month. The podcast is run by Paulo Quiros, Pitr Strait, Andy Hoover, Jon Miller, Joz Vammer, Scott Aiello, and Timothy Nolan; a group of actors, writers, and tabletop role playing enthusiasts.

I found the best part of this podcast was its ability to hold my attention throughout the entire listen. They start off with a catchy jingle before they introduce the players. Then they introduce the characters they will be roleplaying as and jump into the movie universe quickly. It’s simple and easy to understand, even for a first-time listener.

It’s clear early on that the players have studied the movies thoroughly beforehand as the characters they act as are incredibly accurate to the source material. The strengths and faults of the characters are also very well thought out beforehand as all the decisions they make throughout the game are justified and ones the listener could definitely see the source characters doing. Although the host changes every episode, they always do a great job balancing the game by keeping in major movie plot points while at the same time allowing the players to have a lot of creative freedom within their decision making. The result is a skewed version of the original movie with interesting new plot points and hilarious absurdism. It’s probably best to listen to this podcast away from the public as you will find yourself laughing out loud alongside the players as they question how they’ve found themselves in such wacky circumstances. These moments are contrasted perfectly by tough spots within the plot where you’re praying the players are able to get themselves out of an intense situation. With tabletop role-players this experienced, there is never a moment of hesitant decision making or dull dialogue.

Another pro about this podcast is their use of Patreon as their primary income source. This means they do not run advertising during the show. For a podcast revolving around a goal of immersing the listener into a fictional universe, no breaks for advertising seriously works to their advantage and makes it enticing to become a full-time listener. They end the podcast with a mail time segment in which they read fan mail as a group. It leaves the listener with a positive mood and it’s clear that the players genuinely appreciate their fans as they make all the efforts they can to acknowledge and thank them.

I think this podcast is worthy of a strong 4/5 stars. The chemistry between the players and their strong ability to act easily allows for full immersion often leaving the listener to forget about the actors entirely. Their ability to keep you focused for long periods of time is unmatched and great for casual or focused listening. The Film Reroll gets a strong recommendation from me and I look forward to many future listens
