Hi! We are Lucy (she/her) and Daphne (she/her). We are your hosts of The Messy Middle podcast. We have weekly chats with each other and with other business owners about how small businesses are built, diving into the messy bits and discussing all the parts you don’t see on Instagram.

107. Connie Chang | Type C Consulting - Accessibility in Web Design
Connie Chang (she/her) is the Founder and Principal of Type C Consulting, a multidisciplinary web design studio working with enterprise-sized companies that lead with value. Full disclosure—Connie is our friend outside of the workplace so we knew that our conversation was gonna be longer than normal and that we would probably dive deeper into topics. We didn’t expect our conversation to go in this direction but we are so glad it did.
Connie’s approach to business has always been through values. Struck with grief after a personal tragedy, she chose to channel her grief into trying to make a difference with her business, becoming more aware of the types of projects she takes on and who they are serving. A large part of Type C Consulting is ensuring accessibility for websites and finding ways to make technology more available—Connie’s on a personal crusade to ensure that websites are functional for every user.

106. Ben Owens | Ben Owens Photography - Forgetting niching! Experimenting within your industry
Ben Owens (he/him) joins us today to talk about his photography business and what he does as a commercial photographer. Born in Australia, Ben already established his drive as an entrepreneur in New Zealand before relocating to Vancouver. Turning his hobby into his business, Ben captured the market on movement photography and all things fitness.
Our conversation with Ben highlights how small businesses are so nuanced and one size definitely does not fit all. While we’ve often talked about niching down on the Messy Middle Podcast, we had a refreshing and eye-opening chat with Ben about how he chooses to forego a niche. Instead, Ben is powered by curiosity and his creative drive, which drives him to try different projects and go beyond his comfort zone.

Customer Reviews
It’s one of my favourite podcasts!
With real topics and real perspectives I always enjoy the Messy Middle and love how Daphne and Lucy mix marketing/business with inspiring guests from local Vancouver businesses. It helps me feel connected with other small businesses while getting a solid dose of advice that’s relatable.
Subscribed and stoked about it
After binge listening to five episodes the past week or so, I feel like I can confidently give five shiny gold stars! These two women are bright and insightful, and never tacky or preachy (my top complaint about other podcasts). I’m stoked to have them in my regular podcast rotation.
Seriously helpful
Lucy and Daphne always hit on topics that are super salient for people starting a business and they’re really good about not sugar coating things. They’re upfront about their struggles and that’s so important because you finish an ep feeling empowered to act, not deflated because you can’t make everything perfect. Their perspective is refreshing and they make it fun too!
