Chapter I: Like An Oak Tree

Chapter I: Like An Oak Tree

In the years after her death, I uncovered an incredible archive of her life. She’d left behind boxes upon boxes of letters and photographs and diaries. There were preserved albums dating back to the 1920s and letters she’d sent to lovers. There were report cards and deportation papers and love notes from her parents censored by Nazis. Then, amidst all of these papers, I found a plain manila folder. It had a note on it, written in red ink in her shaky cursive handwriting. She’d written my name.

“She’s 16. She should be in school. She should be with her family. Her letters shouldn’t be censored. Sentences shouldn’t be blacked out. Envelopes shouldn’t be stamped with a swastika. But I guess you can get used to anything.”

We share the same sky

This is a beautiful haunting podcast. It is a true story of of courage, wisdom and clarity in the face of extreme adversity. Hannah’s story and journey over 11 years of displacement and running during the Holocaust is beautifully told by her granddaughter who retraced her steps in detail over many years. It’s not only a feat of investigative journalism but a sensitive, personal portrayal of lives affected and intersecting. Though so much is tragic , I felt truly uplifted by the courage and resolute determination of a young girl who held true to her convictions and trust in her ability to overcome and survive.

We Share The Same Sky

This was an amazing journey to be able to travel with Rachel while she was retracing her grandmother’s past and her survival. It was so powerful! Rachel speaks so eloquently and engages the listener throughout her story. I was riveted from the start to the finish. The resources in her website are amazing and I have told so many other educators about this podcast. Try it out today! You won’t be disappointed!!
