Over 19 days in March of 2018, five package bombs were mysteriously placed or mailed to random locations in and around Austin, Texas — killing two people and seriously injuring another five.
During these mysterious, terrifying attacks, hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world would descend on the city for the annual South by Southwest festival, prompting as many federal law enforcement to respond to these bombings as did during the Boston Marathon attacks. On the front lines of it all is the Austin Bomb Squad, who has never experienced anything quite like this in their department’s history.
This is the thrilling, true story of the 19 days of terror that settled over one of the fastest growing cities in the world at one of its busiest times told by the law enforcement, victims, journalists, and residents who witnessed it.

When a package mysteriously explodes on the front porch of a suburban home in Northeast Austin, killing homeowner and father Anthony Stephan House, authorities are mystified. Bombings of this type are incredibly rare and law enforcement has – at best – flimsy theories about motives and suspects. This darkly strange incident fades from the headlines as the annual South by Southwest Festival ramps up.

19 Days | 2. 10 Days Later
Ten days after the mysterious first bomb, another package bomb detonates, killing 17 year-old music prodigy Draylen Mason and critically injuring his mother. As the Austin bomb squad tries to make sense of the scene and the FBI begins their investigation, a third package bomb goes off just a few miles away, injuring 70 year-old Esperanza “Hope” Herrera. It is now clear: there is an active serial bomber on the loose while South by Southwest, one of the largest cultural festivals in the world, is in full swing.

The nephew of Esperanza “Hope” Herrera will drive across the country back to Austin when he hears what happened to his aunt, taking us inside his psyche and the aftermath of the bombing from his perspective. Meanwhile, as all the victims are minorities who have been targeted at their homes on the East side of Austin, Texas, the media and authorities begin to speculate — could these bombings be hate crimes?

As terrified Eastside residents meet with leaders of the Austin community, the 600 plus local and federal authorities working around the clock on the case now grapple with a lack of leads. After a series of bomb threats shut down a concert at SXSW, the crisis grows even more intense when a tripwire bomb detonates on Austin’s southwest side, crippling two college students and putting a whole section of the city on total lockdown.

19 Days | 5. Break
A day after the fourth bomb detonates, a fifth bomb explodes – this time at a FedEx sorting facility just outside of Austin. Two more bombs are discovered at other shipping facilities in the Central Texas area. Diffusing these bombs leads to a major break in the investigation.

A lot of work goes into finding out all the details of an event. Putting it together in a story that makes sense is hard and the team has done and continues to do an amazing job at it. Engaging, captivating and informative podcast.
