Maia Schweizer was born in the States, has a Masters in geobiology from CalTech, completed her PhD on Martian geoscience at Oxford, became a McKinsey consultant in London, and now works in Australian renewable energy. Until recently, she was the CEO of CleanCo (Queensland's government-owned green energy corporation) and will soon take up a senior position at Fortescue Future Industries. Rachel speaks to Maia about her unusual journey into the energy sector, COP 26 and climate targets, and how to restructure Queensland's energy industry. Maia's vision for Australia's green economy is refreshingly pragmatic, specific, and optimistic.

Lech Blaine's essay 'Top Blokes: the Larrikin Myth, Class and Power' (Quarterly Essay) is a gutsy exploration of how Australian politicians concoct a "larrikin" persona (by faking a "true blue" masculinity of footy and beer drinking) in a bid to relate to working class voters. Rachel talks to Lech about his childhood in regional Queensland, about the dichotomy between Bob Hawke and Paul Keating, and about the invention of Scott Morrison's daggy dad "ScoMo'' persona. They finish by discussing what it is that Lech captures about Queensland class and politics that eludes so many politicians and commentators.

Cameron Costello is a Quandamooka traditional owner and a former corporate lawyer. Until recently, he was the CEO of the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation, (QYAC), the Aboriginal corporation overseeing native title on Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island), Mulgumpin (Moreton Island), and parts of the Redlands coast.

I talked to Cameron about the 16 year process the Quandamooka people went through to have their native title to Minjerribah (Straddie) recognised, about life on the frontline of the struggle for Aboriginal justice, and about what he thinks a genuinely reconciled Australia would look like.

Deep North acknowledges the traditional owners of Meanjin/Brisbane, the Turrbul and Jagera people, and pays respects to elders past, present, and emerging.

Shane Knuth grew up in North Queensland, moving from the cane town of Tully to Collinsville, a union stronghold. At 17 he became a fettler on the railway and at 38 the Nationals MP for Charters Towers. In eight terms in the Queensland Parliament he’s represented three electorates and three parties, creating a place for himself as a humble, authentic and well regarded local representative.
