Join us for episode 11 of the Sauna Twins Podcast! We are joined by our good friend Glenn Auerbach from SaunaTimes in the US. Glenn is “a lifelong student of authentic sauna” and dedicated to helping people discover and create good sauna experiences.

He is the founder of SaunaTimes and the writer of “Sauna Build, From Start to Finnish,” which is a book on how to build your own sauna. His sauna journey began in 1985 on his hitch hike around Europe and the first surprising sauna experience in Scandinavia, which lead to found inspiration of spreading the joy of heat. Glenn is a founding board member of the Sauna Research Institute, Vice president of the 612 Sauna Society, member of the North America Sauna Society and the list goes on. You can also listen to Glenn’s Sauna Talk Podcast, where he talks to aficionados within the world of sauna.

Glenn talks about his sauna journey, starting from his initial experience of taking sauna every evening whilst on vacation in the Finnish/Swedish archipelago as a young man, through the process of starting Sauna Times as a vehicle to document how to build a sauna.

During our conversation with Glenn, we also talked about the recently held UK Sauna Summit, how he originally got into the world of sweatbathing, sharing cultural insights from across the pond, chatting about community saunas and the "holy trinity" within the sauna world.

Welcome to episode 10 of the Sauna Twins Podcast! In this wide-ranging conversation we are joined by a special guest all the way from Australia, Nikita Miltiadou from Blue Mountains Sauna. Nikita is approaching the end of an exciting expedition to experience as many different types of saunas across Europe as possible, with the goal of finding out how quirky, authentic and modernised sauna can be. Nikita is the co-founder of Blue Mountains Sauna in Leura, a town in New South Wales about 1.5 hours drive from Sydney.

Nikita shares the story behind Blue Mountains Sauna and their vision, attributing credit to his partner Inga Sommerfeld, who is half Russian, half German. Having grown up accustomed to the sauna culture, she was surprised at how hard it was to find a proper one in Australia. The idea for creating a Finnish-style public sauna came from her yearning for a traditional, European sauna experience. Blue Mountains Sauna was founded in 2022 and together with the team, they are on a mission to “spread the good heat.”

Nikita made a detour at Finnmark towards the end of his sauna pilgrimage to chat about the places he’s visited, most memorable “löylys,” how a public Finnish sauna found its way to the Australian mountains, sauna hats, heating methods, how sauna culture has spread across the world and is finding its footing in different countries, the global influx towards public saunas post COVID-19 and much more.

Episode #6 Mikkel Aaland, Author of 'Sweat' and champion of Sauna Aid!

In this the latest Sauna Twins podcast instalment, we are blessed to be joined by "the Godfather" of sweat bathing, Mikkel Aaland. Mikkel essentially 'wrote the book' on sweat bathing culture and community bathing culture as it grew to it's first real peak in the 70's. In this episode we discuss sweat bathing cultures from around the world, what happened to this community bathing revolution following the Aids epidemic, and how it now experiences an even greater renaissance!

Mikkel explains how his pioneering book 'Sweat - The Illustrated History and Description of the Finnish Sauna, Russian Bania, Islamic Hammam, Japanese Mushi-Buro, Mexican Temescal, and American Indian & Eskimo Sweatlodge' was one of the first pieces of writing to bring together the oral traditions of sweat bathing from across the world and put this into writing. He also teases at his new TV series "The Perfect Sweat" which recently completed filming and will hopefully soon be published. I this documentary series, Mikkel explores these sweat bathing experiences from across the world, from Finnish Sauna to Russian Banya, Turkish Hammam to Japanese Onsen, native American sweat lodges and Central American Temezcal.

Mikkel is also a driving force behind Sauna Aid, a charity designed to help deprived communities access community bathing facilities. We ask the questions of what this is and how it works, as well as understanding how this is supporting communities across the world.
