Patricia Peat is the Founder of Cancer Options. She says:
I recognised the importance of looking at cancer through a metabolic lens around 24 years ago, following several years working in orthodox medicine and running oncology clinics.
I really struggled with seeing people have cancer treatments without any recovery strategies put in place right through to preventing recurrence, and dealing with late stage strategies. So, I started researching what scientific evidence was available worldwide to address this.
In 2003 I set up Cancer Options so I could support people with cancer by looking at their individual needs. Taking a metabolic, integrative approach I develop support plans for my clients which I review, monitor and adapt as their circumstances change . Cancer is not a static disease; its adaptive and clever and in understanding the metabolic environment, it provides me with an insight into how best to support my clients in an effective way.

Put cancer aside and focus on metabolic health.

Dr Anthony Chaffee is an American medical doctor and Neurosurgical resident who, over a span of 25+ years, has researched the optimal nutrition for human performance and health. It is his assertion that most of the so-called chronic diseases we treat as doctors are caused by the food we eat, or don’t eat, and can be reversed with dietary changes to a species specific diet.

Dr Anthony’s Top Tips
If you are going carnivore – eat enough and eat enough fat. A lot more fat than you have ever eaten before. Eat until fatty meat doesn’t taste good.
Give it time – some people get quick results, some people take time.
Count your blessings – you might not lose weight initially but notice the other benefits.

191: Maia Sutherland - And Now For Something A Little Different
Maia Sutherland
Maia Sutherland says:
I am a life-long vegetarian turned carnivore. Now with far too much actual fuel going to my brain, I have become utterly obsessed with the topic and writing a book hoping to inspire people to spend parts of their life in ketosis and reduce their disharmonies.
The intention of the book is that anyone from any country, religion, education and budget, can benefit from applying what is laid out inside it. Other than that, I am also studying with Dr Nasha Winters, mostly for my own understanding rather than as a potential job.
I also make a superb line of unique jewellery often combining precious stones with 2000 year old beads and some gold!
Since carnivore for the first time in my life I can sleep through the night, and do maths and I marvel at how it buffers mental states such as depression and anxiety. Perhaps because I have more mental energy to think, I am more angry, or perhaps that is the peri-menopause which is a whole other conversation. I am totally in love with the subject of health, and through keto, carnivore and low carb, my understanding has gone through a huge upgrade. I am also a trained acupuncturist since 2002 and was a masseur for 12 years.

190: Doug Reynolds and Pam Devine - The Journal of Metabolic Health
Doug Reynolds and Pam Devine
When Pam Devine turned 47 she was super excited that she had found something that helped her to lose the weight that she had put on since turning 40. Up until that point no matter what she did she couldn’t lose it. Pam felt she worked out more than many of the people she encountered during her workday and was getting super frustrated with her failure to keep her weight under control.
Once she and her partner Doug Reynolds found keto and changed their way of eating the weight dropped away and she found peace of mind, feeling totally satiated and more focused than she has ever been. Best yet, the ups and downs of blood sugar roller coaster have calmed and she feels like she found food freedom, lowering her growing anxiety of not knowing what to eat for health.
Now with Doug, Pam hosts the Low Carb USA events that bring together medical professionals and experts in the low carb / keto / carnivore world to share their knowledge and the latest research with other health professionals and non-healthcare people. They are working towards halting the catastrophic rise in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases that we’ve seen since 1977.
Pam is also one of the key Founding Members and Volunteers of The Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners.
Doug Reynolds is the Founder and CEO of LowCarbUSA® and President of the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners.
LowCarbUSA (now called Symposium of Metabolic Health) provides a platform for internationally renowned scientists and medical practitioners to present the ever-increasing body of evidence on the benefits of reducing carbohydrates in the diet and adding in healthy fats. It has now evolved into one of the primary resources for the low carb community. This includes a huge library of educational videos, a growing database of practitioners and dietitians and sports trainers who are open to the carb restriction conversation as well as a searchable database for papers and articles covering the research into the evidence supporting this lifestyle.
The SMHP is a non-profit for practitioners focused on metabolic health and they have a panel of advisors to oversee the creation and maintenance of a set of ‘Clinical Guidelines for Therapeutic Carbohydrate Restriction’ which was first published in May, 2019. The SMHP also defines numerous pathways for accreditation and the forums encourage open discussion which helps to establish Standard of Care around carbohydrate restriction.

Dr Louise Phillips MBBS (hons 1), FRACGP, Senior Lecturer UQ, Certified Medical Practitioner with the Nutrition Network.
Dr Louise Phillips is an Australian GP with a passion for medical education, doctors’ wellbeing, and metabolic health. She supervises GP registrars, instructs medical students as a Senior Lecturer with the University of Queensland and works as an External Clinical Teacher for the RACGP (coaching registrars in consultation skills and bedside manner). She is a Certified Medical Practitioner with the Nutrition Network.
Having worked as a GP for 20 years, she understands the challenging environment of primary care, with its vast curriculum, time constraints and burden of chronic disease. She aims to help her colleagues improve their life balance, by fine-tuning their time management, providing implementable stress reduction strategies, and teaching them about using low carbohydrate nutrition to improve the health of their patients and optimise their own well-being.
Whilst she loves to restore the health of patients, she is equally enthusiastic about helping colleagues thrive within flawed health systems.

You don’t have to be perfect.
Know what you are eating before your meal time – plan ahead.
If you have a doctor who is dismissive of low carb, you don’t have change your doctor. Find a practitioner to support your low carb journey and keep the doctor who knows your history.
