Drug testing of drivers after accidents.

Tástáil drugaí le déanamh ar thiománaithe tar éis timpistí.

From this little Friday, it will be mandatory to drug test drivers involved in serious road accidents.

Ón Aoine beag seo, beidh sé éigeantach tástáil drugaí a dhéanamh ar thiománaithe atá bainteach le tubaistí tromchúiseacha bóthair.

Currently, drivers only have to be tested for alcohol in those circumstances, although it used to be the option of Gardai to drug test them as well.

Faoi láthair, ní chaithfear ach tástáil alcóil a dhéanamh ar thiománaithe sna cúinsí sin, cé go mbíodh sé mar rogha ag Gardaí tástáil drugaí a dhéanamh orthu freisin.

Research that has been carried out on road accidents in the State shows that more people than ever are driving under the influence of drugs and it is in this evidence that the law has been amended by the Minister of State in the Department of Transport, Jack Chambers.

Léiríonn taighde atá déanta ar thubaistí bóthair sa Stát go bhfuil níos mó daoine ná riamh ag tiomáint faoi thionchar drugaí agus is ina fhianaise sin atá an dlí leasaithe ag an Aire Stáit sa Roinn Iompair, Jack Chambers.

Jack Chambers said today that intoxication caused by alcohol or drugs is one of the four main causes of road accidents in the State.

Dúirt Jack Chambers inniu go bhfuil meisce de bharr alcóil nó drugaí ar cheann de na ceithre phríomhchúis atá le tubaistí bóthair sa Stát.

Gardai have already bought 10,000 drug testing kits under the idea of their new charge.

Tá 10,000 foireann tástála drugaí ceannaithe ag na Gardaí cheana féin faoi thuairim a gcúraim nua.

The test takes about eight minutes from start to finish, but according to the new law, people are not allowed to wait longer than half an hour.

Thart ar ocht nóiméad ó thús go deireadh a thógann sé an tástáil a dhéanamh ach níl cead daoine a choinneáil ag fanacht níos faide ná leathuair an chloig de réir an dlí nua.

Rafah: over scores killed by Israel in area

Rafah: os cionn scóir maraithe ag Iosrael i gceantar 'sábháilte'.

It is reported that over a score of people were killed when Israeli military forces fired missiles at a newly established refugee camp west of the city of Rafah in southern Gaza.

Tuairiscítear gur maraíodh os cionn scór daoine nuair a scaoil fórsaí míleata Iosrael diúracáin le campa teifeach nuabhunaithe siar ó chathair Rafah i ndeisceart Gaza.

The Hamas health ministry in Gaza says twelve of those killed were women.

Deir aireacht sláinte Hamas in Gaza gur mná ab ea dháréag den dream a maraíodh.

The camp was based in an area by the sea that the Israelis said was safe.

Is i gceantar cois farraige a dúirt na hIosraelaigh a bhí sábháilte a bhí an campa bunaithe.

In fact, it was the Israelis themselves who ordered the refugees to evacuate there.

Go deimhin, ba iad na hIosraelaigh féin a d'ordaigh do na teifigh aslonnú ann.

Various agencies - including the United Nations - have said many times that no place in the area is safe as long as the Israeli forces are being bombarded with artillery from tanks and missiles from the air.

Tá sé ráite go minic ag gníomhaireachtaí éagsúla – na Náisiúin Aontaithe ina measc – nach bhfuil aon áit sa limistéar sábháilte a fhad is atá fórsaí Iosrael á thuairgneáil le hairtléire ó thancanna agus le diúracáin ón aer.

It is also reported that Israeli tanks have reached the center of Rafah for the first time since they began their major assault on the city at the beginning of this month.

Tuairiscítear freisin go bhfuil lár Rafah bainte amach ag tancanna na nIosraelach den chéad uair ó chuir siad tús lena mórionsaí ar an gcathair i dtús na míosa seo.

Taoiseach Simon Harris said today that the excuse the Israelis give every time they make a speech in Gaza is insulting.

Dúirt an Taoiseach Simon Harris inniu gur táir agus gur colúil an leithscéal a thugann na hIosraelaigh gach uair a dhéanann siad sléacht in Gaza.

    Court ordering d

Cúirt ag ordú d'Iosrael deireadh a chur le hionsaí ar Rafah.

The International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to immediately end the major attack by the military forces of that country on the city of Rafah in the south of Gaza.

Tá ordú tugtha ag an gCúirt Bhreithiúnais Idirnáisiúnta d'Iosrael deireadh a chur láithreach bonn leis an mórionsaí atá fórsaí míleata na tíre sin a dhéanamh ar chathair Rafah i ndeisceart Gaza.

The order relates to the case brought by the South African Government against the Israelis for the alleged genocide they are committing against the Palestinians of Gaza.

Baineann an t-ordú leis an gcás atá tugtha ag Rialtas na hAfraice Theas in aghaidh na nIosraelach faoin gcinedhíothú a mhaítear atá siad a dhéanamh ar Phalaistínigh Gaza.

In the ruling announced by the International Court of Justice today, it is said that things have deteriorated in Gaza since the court already ordered Israel to improve the living conditions of the community there.

Sa rialú a d'fhógair an Chúirt Bhreithiúnais Idirnáisiúnta inniu, deirtear go bhfuil cúrsaí imithe chun donais in Gaza ó d'ordaigh an chúirt cheana d'Iosrael cúinsí maireachtala an phobail ansin a fheabhsú.

The ruling highlights the current lack of food, water, hygiene facilities and medicine in the enclave and states that the court is of the opinion that the Israelis are not properly addressing the humanitarian crisis.

Soilsítear sa rialú an easpa bia, uisce, saoráidí sláinteachais agus cógas leighis atá san iamhchríoch faoi láthair agus deirtear go bhfuil an chúirt den tuairim nach bhfuil na hIosraelaigh ag tabhairt aghaidh mar is ceart ar an ngéarchéim dhaonnúil.

Fifteen judges from different countries sit in the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court.

Cúig bhreitheamh déag ó thíortha éagsúla a shuíonn sa Chúirt Bhreithiúnais Idirnáisiúnta, dá ngairtear an Chúirt Dhomhanda leis.

Thirteen of them accepted the ruling.

Trí dhuine dhéag acu a ghlac leis an rialú.

The two who opposed him are from Uganda and Israel.

Is as Uganda agus Iosrael féin an bheirt a chuir ina aghaidh.

The International Court of Justice has no practical authority, however, as there is no system of structures to implement rulings.

Ní aon údarás praiticiúil ag an gCúirt Bhreithiúnais Idirnáisiúnta, ámh, mar nach bhfuil aon chóras na struchtúr ann lena rialuithe a chur i bhfeidhm.

Ireland to formally recognize the state of Palestine from 28 May.

Éire le stát na Palaistíne a aithint go foirmiúil ón 28 Bealtaine.

Taoiseach Simon Harris announced today that Ireland was to formally recognize Palestine as a state from 28 May.

D'fhógair an Taoiseach Simon Harris inniu go raibh Éire leis an bPalaistín a aithint go foirmiúil mar stát ón 28 Bealtaine.

Palestine includes the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza which have been separated from each other and dominated by Israel since 1967.

Cuimsíonn an Phalaistín críocha na bPalaistíneach sa Bhruach Thiar agus in Gaza atá dealaithe óna chéile agus a bhfuil forlámhas ag Iosrael orthu ó 1967.

Palestinian East Jerusalem has also been under Israeli control ever since.

Tá Iarúsailéim Thoir na bPalaistíneach faoi smacht na nIosraelach ó shin freisin.

The Taoiseach indicated that Ireland, Norway and Spain were together to recognize Palestine from next Tuesday and that the three countries would take whatever action was required to implement that decision.

Thug an Taoiseach le fios go raibh Éire, an Iorua agus an Spáinn in éineacht le aitheantas a thabhairt don Phalaistín ón Máirt seo chugainn agus go ndéanfadh na trí thír astu féin pé beart a theastódh leis an gcinneadh sin a chur i bhfeidhm.

He said he was hopeful that other countries would follow the example of the three countries in the coming weeks.

Dúirt sé go raibh sé dóchasach go leanfadh tíortha eile eiseamláir na dtrí thír sna seachtainí amach romhainn.

Simon Harris made the historic announcement this morning at Government Houses alongside two other Coalition leaders, Micheál Martin and Éamon Ryan.

Is ag Tithe an Rialtais in éindí le beirt cheannairí eile an Chomhrialtais, Micheál Martin agus Éamon Ryan, a rinne Simon Harris an fógra stairiúil ar maidin inniu.

With Irish history as his authority, the Taoiseach said that this is an important day for both Ireland and Palestine.

Agus stair na hÉireann mar údarás aige, dúirt an Taoiseach gur lá tábhachtach é seo d'Éirinn agus don Phalaistín araon.

On 21 January 1919, he said, Ireland asked the countries of the world to formally recognize our independence, our national identity, our historical struggle (against slavery), our right to self-determination and our right to justice.

Ar an 21 Eanáir 1919, arsa sé, d'iarr Éire ar thíortha an domhain aitheantas foirimiúil a thabhairt dár neamhspleáchasna, dár bhféiniúlacht náisiúnta, dár gcomhrac stairiúil (in aghaidh na daoirse), dár gceart chun féinchinntiúcháin agus dár gceart chun ceartais.

It is in those same terms, said the Taoiseach, that Ireland is supporting Palestine's application for international recognition.

Is sna téarmaí céanna sin, a dúirt an Taoiseach, atá Éire ag tacú le hiarratas na Palaistíne ar aitheantas idirnáisiúnta.

Simon Harris said that Ireland also recognizes the state of Israel and he again condemned "the barbaric acts committed by Hamas in October (last)".

Dúirt Simon Harris go n-aithníonn Éire stát Iosrael chomh maith agus cháin sé arís "na gníomhartha barbartha a rinne Hamas i mí Dheireadh Fómhair (seo caite)".

However, he said, Hamas is not the same as the Palestinian people and said that both states must exist - Israel and Palestine - in order for there to be any hope of ending the intergenerational violence.

Ar a shon sin, arsa sé, ní hionann Hamas agus muintir na Palaistíne agus dúirt go gcaithfeadh an dá stát a bheith ann – Iosrael agus an Phalaistín – le go mbeadh aon dóchas ann go gcuirfí deireadh leis an bhforéigean idirghlúineach.

He said that Ireland would stand with people who are willing to resort to politics for the ...

Another 90 tents have been put up by the side of the Grand Canal.

90 puball eile curtha suas le taobh na Canálach Móire.

International asylum seekers have set up over 90 tents by the side of the Grand Canal between Baggot Street Bridge and Wilton Place in central Dublin.

Tá os cionn 90 puball curtha suas ag iarrthóirí tearmainn idirnáisiúnta le taobh na Canálach Móire idir Droichead Shráid Bhagóid agus Plás Wilton i lár Bhaile Átha Cliath.

Tents have been being put up in the area for a few weeks by men from abroad who have applied for asylum in Ireland but the State cannot afford to provide them with accommodation.

Tá pubaill á gcur suas sa cheantar le cúpla seachtain ag fir ó thar lear a bhfuil iarrtas ar thearmann in Éirinn déanta acu ach nach bhfuil sé d'acmhainn ag an Stát lóistín a chur ar fáil dóibh.

Applications for asylum are made at the International Protection Office on Lower Mount Street, a few hundred meters north of the Grand Canal.

Is san Oifig um Chosaint Idirnáisúnta ar Shráid an Mhóta Íochtarach, cúpla céad méadar ó thuaidh ón gCanáil Mhór, a dhéantar iarratas ar thearmann.

Tents had been erected outside the office and in other places along the canal closer to the office for a few weeks, but the authorities cleared them out of their way and barriers were erected in those places to prevent them from being erected again.

Bhí pubaill curtha suas lasmuigh den oifig agus in ionaid eile le hais na canálach níos gaire don oifig le cúpla seachtain, ach ghlan na húdaráis as a mbealach iad agus cuireadh bacainní suas sna háiteanna sin le nach bhféadfaí iad a chur suas arís.

It seems, however, that the men and their tents are being pushed back further.

Dealraíonn sé nach bhfuil ann, áfach, ach go bhfuil na fir agus a bpubaill á mbrú siar tuilleadh.

Taoiseach Simon Harris said today that he wants to tackle the issue compassionately, but also sensibly.

Dúirt an Taoiseach Simon Harris inniu gur mian leis dul i ngleic leis an gceist go trócaireach, ach go ciallmhar freisin.

Speaking on RTÉ, he indicated that the asylum system in Ireland was not in line with what is in place in other member states of the European Union and said that this had to be corrected.

Ag labhairt dó ar RTÉ, thug sé le fios nach raibh an córas tearmainn in Éirinn ag teacht lena bhfuil i bhfeidhm i mballstáit eile an Aontaigh Eorpaigh agus dúirt go gcaithfí é sin a chur ina cheart.

The current system has the capacity to accept 3,500 people a year, said Simon Harris.

Tá sé d'acmhainn ag an gcóras atá ann faoi láthair glacadh le 3,500 duine sa bhliain, arsa Simon Harris.

It is believed, however, that between 26,000 and 30,000 asylum seekers could come to this country this year.

Táthar á thuairimiú, ámh, go bhféadfadh idir 26,000 agus 30,000 iarrthóir tearmainn teacht chun na tíre seo i mbliana.

The issue was discussed at a heated meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party last night, where Finance Minister Michael McGrath said the situation had gotten out of hand.

Pléadh an cheist i gcruinniú teasaí de pháirtí parlaiminte Fhianna Fáil aréir, áit a ndúirt an tAire Airgeadais Michael McGrath go raibh an scéal imithe ó smacht.

Some people in the meeting criticized the Government's approach, especially the way the issue is being put before the public.

Cháin roinnt daoine sa chruinniú cur chuige an Rialtais, go háirithe an chaoi a bhfuil an cheist á cur os comhair an phobail.

It is reported that the Government is considering establishing a large residential center for asylum seekers on a site in north-west County Dublin where a prison was once to be built.

Permission to buy tobacco to be raised from 18 to 21 years.

Cead tobac a cheannach le hardú ó 18 go 21 bliain.

The age at which people can buy cigarettes and other tobacco products is to be raised from eighteen to 21, according to new legislation to be proposed to the Cabinet this week by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly.

Tá an aois ag ar féidir le daoine toitíní agus táirgí eile tobac a cheannach le hardú ó ocht mbliana déag go 21 bliain, de réir reachtaíocht nua atá le moladh don Chomhaireacht an tseachtain seo ag an Aire Sláinte Stephen Donnelly.

For people who are currently between the ages of eighteen and 21, the bill will be drafted in such a way that they will still be allowed to buy tobacco.

Maidir le daoine atá idir ocht mbliana déag agus 21 faoi láthair, dréachtófar an bille sa chaoi is go mbeidh cead acusan tobac a cheannach go fóill.

Minister Donnelly said that the legislation is really aimed at young people between the ages of fifteen and seventeen.

Dúirt an tAire Donnelly gur ar dhaoine óga idir chúig bliana déag agus seacht mbliana déag atá an reachtaíocht dírithe i ndáiríre.

It's easy for people in that age group to buy tobacco at the moment, he said, but if the minimum age is raised to 21 it will make them a lot of trouble.

Is furasta do dhaoine san aoisghrúpa sin tobac a cheannach faoi láthair, arsa sé, ach má ardófar an aois íosta go 21 déanfaidh sé ciotaí an-mhór dóibh.

A report from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland states that more than any other time people take their first puff of tobacco between the ages of fifteen and seventeen.

Deirtear i dtuarascáil ó Choláiste Ríoga Lianna na hÉireann gur idir chúig bliana déag agus seacht mbliana déag thar aon am eile is mó a bhaineann daoine an chéad gal tástála as tobac.

If the minimum age were raised to 21, the number of teenagers who smoke could be reduced by 25%, according to the authors of the report.

Dá n-ardófaí an aois íosta go 21 d'fhéadfaí an líon déagóirí a chaitheann tobac a laghdú 25 faoin gcéad , dar le húdair na tuarascála.

It is estimated that around 4,500 people die in the State every year due to smoking.

Áirítear go bhfaigheann thart ar 4,500 duine bás sa Stát gach bliain mar gheall ar thobac a chaitheamh.

They are most affected by heart disease, lung disease and cancer.

Galar croí, galar scamhóg agus ailse is mó a bhaineann dóibh.

As well as raising the minimum age, the sale of tobacco products and vaping products from machines in commercial premises is to be banned.

Chomh maith leis an aois íosta a ardú, táthar le cosc a chur ar tháirgí tobac agus ar tháirgí vápála a dhíol ó mheaisíní in áitribh thráchtála.

The Government also intends to ban disposable vaping cigarettes and place restrictions on the advertising of vaping products.

Tá rún ag an Rialtas freisin cosc a chur ar ghaltoitíní aon uaire agus srianta a chur ar an gcaoi a bhfógraítear táirgí vápála.
