"We take so much from the people around us - from their stories, actions and experiences. Over this series I’ll be chatting to people that inspire me. Not just about what they’ve done, but about who they are and what makes them tick. I’ll be lifting the lid to uncover some gems of wisdom and advice for us all, at the same time as trying to answer questions of my own!"

#16 - Life Is What You Make It: Matt Hampson OBE

Matt Hampson was in the rare position as a 20 year old where all his dreams were coming true. Growing up in rugby country Matt had been hooked on the game since he was 5 years old and now he was one of the best players in Rngland. But in March 2005 during a training session with the U21 national side that was all about to change.

A scrum collapsed sending Matts head crashing to the floor with almost a tonne of weight following in behind him. Matt now lives with one of the highest grades of spinal cord injury you can survive, no movement from below the neck, a permanent tracheostomy and full time care. Despite all of this he has gone on to achieve the most incredible things. Inspiring thousands and helping hundreds more through his charity ‘The Matt Hampson Foundation’. He was one of the first people I thought of when I woke up in intensive care and he continues to be one of my biggest inspirations to this day.

#15 - Do Something For Nothing: Josh Coombs

#15 - Do Something For Nothing: Josh Coombs

Josh is a hair dresser by trade, but with a twist. On the way home from work one day in 2015 he got chatting to a homeless guy and ended up giving him a haircut, a haircut that would be the start of something special. Through that haircut Josh realised a level of connectivity and openness in the ensuing conversation that he hadn’t achieved before with the many homeless people he would stop to chat with. So armed with his scissors and a spark of inspiration Josh set out onto the streets of London and through the simple act of a haircut started to uncover the incredible stories of the human beings that are forced to live on our streets.

I was first made aware of Josh through my good friend @ebonyescalona who sent me his book ‘Do Something For Nothing’ and I immediately knew I had to meet him. That happened when I went to watch him speak in London and believe me it wasn’t a disappointment. A down to earth, deep, interesting guy who is making a difference for all of the right reasons.

In this conversation we talk about:
    What it means to care,
    Finding purpose through helping others,
How we can best make a difference,
    The power of communication,
    and much more.

#14 - Taking The Leap: Ben Watson

#14 - Taking The Leap: Ben Watson

Just six years ago Ben Watson was sat behind his desk in central London, staring at spreadsheet waiting for the clock to strike 6 so the could get straight to the pub for his mandatory 4 pints of lager before heading home for a takeaway, watching a bit of TV and going to bed, only to get up and repeat the process over and over again. He didn’t hate his life, it’s all he knew. One day however Ben had the overwhelming feeling something needed to change but unlike most he acted on that urge, in fact he didn’t just act on it, he took that idea and ran with it, well cycled with it all the way to a Paralympic Games.

I first met Ben underneath Mt Fuji when I interviewed him after winning his first gold medal for British para cycling and it immediately became one of my favourite interviews I’ve ever done. He literally couldn’t believe wha he had just achieved… Bens story is a great example of how with enough motivation and drive anyone can turn their life around, step on to a new path or chase a dream. How a single decisive moment, the decision to break free of your own enforced narrative can change your life.

#13 Mastering Your Craft: Lee McKenzie

#13 Mastering Your Craft: Lee McKenzie

Todays guest is Lee McKenzie. Lee is a highly respected broadcast journalist and presenter who has covered some of the biggest news and sports events of recent times. I think that everyone is born with a gift, some people are lucky enough to discover that gift in their life time some even luckier to align their life with it at a young age, it’s fair to say that Lee found her gift pretty early. She started her career as a written journalist at just the age of 15 and set off on a very steep trajectory, becoming the youngest person in the UK to ever present the news at just 22 years old. Lee has gone on to have an amazing career both in TV and written journalism and is still at the peak of her powers having covered just about every major event in the British sporting calendar this year alone. She’s also just finished her first book. So given all of that - when I turned up to my first ever live game working in front of the camera for channel 4, shaking in my boots, terrified of messing things up on national television, it was a great relief to have Lees calming hand steering the ship. From that day Lee has been my biggest mentor in the new world of broadcasting I’ve found myself in, and I couldn’t of wished for a better one. Not just an infinite well of knowledge but a great person to.

    We talk about:
    Identity
    The professional approach
    How to ask questions
    Maintaining balance
    Searching for purpose\
    & loads more

    Enjoy!

#12 Owning Change: Kylie Grimes MBE

#12 Owning Change: Kylie Grimes MBE

I was lucky enough to go to Tokyo last year to work for Channel 4 on the Paralympics and the first sport I covered was the wheelchair rugby…. which turned out to be one of the best few days of sport I’ve ever witnessed. Not only was I blown away by the standard of competition but GB ended up winning the Gold medal. Their firs ever team sports gold at any Paralympics.

One of GBs key players and biggest characters that immediately gained a new no1 fan in myself is Kylie Grimes.

Kylie had a life changing spinal cord injury back in 2006 which put an end to her promising show jumping and athletics prospects but despite her high level of injury which now means she uses a wheelchair she has literally just cracked on in life and bares a level of acceptance of her injury that puts me to shame. She really has become a big inspiration to me since meeting her at the Tokyo games and I loved this chat with her.
