The Gleason score is the first step in deciding if you have prostate cancer. The Gleason grade is given to each patient based on the grade of cancer cells present in the cancer. The lowest grade is grade one, while the highest grade is grade five. A Gleason score of six represents a low-grade cancer, while a Gleason score of seven or eight indicates a moderate or high-grade cancer.


The Gleason score can be very helpful in determining whether or not you have prostate cancer. If you have a high-grade tumor on a needle biopsy, it will be included in your Gleason score.
