Vegans...we need to talk with Psychologist Melanie Joy

Vegans...we need to talk with Psychologist Melanie Joy

In Episode 112 I sit down with Harvard-educated Psychologist and best selling author Melanie Joy to discuss how we form our beliefs about food and how vegans can have healthier, more productive, conversations with non-vegans. An episode that I believe will be highly instructive regardless of the diet that you follow.

    In this episode we cover:

•Melanie's personal journey to studying Psychology at Harvard and writing her award winning book "Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism"
    •Why our food choices matter
    •The carnism ideaology
•Carnistic defense systems and the three N's: 'Normal, Natural and Necessary
•Effective vegan advocacy: how to communicate better as a vegan
    •Shame vs guilt
•The idea of thinking about process vs content when communicating with someone who holds a different opinion to you
•Why the debate format sets us up to fail
•How you can be a part of the solution
    •What a 'vegan ally' is
•The idea of watering the right seeds
    •and much more

While my episodes usually focus on nutrition science I found this exchange fascinating and believe many of the learnings hold true for our communication in general, whether that be related to food choices and the exploitation of animals or not. My plan is to extend this into a 3-4 part series, with Melanie to return and another high profile vegan activist in the coming months so we can continue exploring this topic together.

Cell based meat and the future of food with Bruce Friedrich

    •and much more

If you're a regular listener you will know I prefer to do these conversations in person. I apologise in advance for slightly tinny audio from Bruce's end - the recording software is a bit hit and miss compared to when you are in the same room! Nonetheless it's certainly not the worst audio I have heard and the information is tremendously insightful.

Can we say what diet is best for health with David Katz, MD

Can we say what diet is best for health with David Katz, MD

In Episode #108 I sit down with Dr David Katz, MD who in my opinion, is one of the greatest voices of clarity in a space of science which let's be frank, is littered with confusion tactics, hidden agendas and bias. This is a great episode which reinforces many of the key principles that I have been sharing with you via social media and on this show for the past 2 + years. It also emphasises the 3 pillars that I look to when making my personal food decisions - the pillar of human health, planetary health and animal welfare.

In this episode we specifically talk about:

•Why an infectious disease pandemic may be what we need to take chronic disease more seriously
•The number one risk factor for chronic disease in developed countries
•Why debating the little stuff is keeping us from making impact on the big stuff
•The characteristics of an optimal diet
•Can we say what the single best diet is
•The importance of the replacement nutrient in nutrition science
•The use of strawman diets in nutrition science
•Should we eat fish? What are the considerations here?
•Would adding animal products to an optimally planned vegan diet improve one's health
    •and much more

I really hope you enjoy the show. Of course, if you do, please share your feedback with David and I on social media. The best place to find David is on Twitter - you can also find me on Twitter and Instagram too.

Below is a few resources that we spoke about in this episode:

    •David's website
    •David's wife's recipes at Cuisinicity
•David's books - How to Eat & The Truth About Food
•Why Two Pandemics are better than one

•Why Doug changed his own personal diet some 20 years ago
    •What sprouting is
    •Sprouts Vs Shoots Vs Microgreens
•The nutritional benefits of sprouts including the anti-cancer molecules found in broccoli sprouts
    •The cost of sprouting

•The typical equipment needed to sprout
    •Choosing the right seeds
    •The typical sprouting process
•The importance of water quality when sprouting

    •and much more

    Resources:

•The Sprout Book by Doug Evans- Booktopia - For Australian's or Amazon (If Amazon doesn't ship to you, just google 'The Sprout Book' to find a local book store that's selling it)
•My blog 'Sprouting 101' to help you get started. Including specific information on sprouting broccoli sprouts and flaxseeds to help get you going. Flaxseeds are one of my favourites to sprout because it increases their Omega 3 content, which as you are most likely well aware, features in the Plant Proof Food Pyramid.
