How Estimates Changed My Photography Career
In this episode of The Fashion Photography Show, I'm sharing the ultimate game changer that revolutionized my financial dealings as a fashion photographer: estimates. I'll dive into why using estimates transformed my career, how they facilitate clear communication with clients, and provide practical steps for incorporating them into your business.
Introduction to Estimates:
Discover why estimates are essential for financial success and client negotiations.
Learn about my personal journey and how starting to use estimates in 2020 changed my career.
What is an Estimate?:
Understand what an estimate is: a detailed quote that breaks down the costs of a shoot, similar to an invoice but without requesting payment upfront.
Key components include day rates, creative fees, usage fees, costs of assistants, equipment, studio hire, retouching, and travel.
Benefits of Using Estimates:
Clarity for Clients: Breaking down costs helps clients understand where their money is going, making it easier for them to accept your fees.
Facilitates Negotiation: Allows for clear and visual negotiation without compromising your income. Adjust specific items instead of reducing your rates.
Transparency and Avoiding Misunderstandings: Clear estimates avoid awkward conversations and ensure both parties are on the same page.
Practical Steps to Implement Estimates:
Creating a Sustainable Business Model: Set prices that reflect your value and cover all costs.
Adjusting Rates: Regularly review and adjust your pricing as you grow.

Tackling Money Blocks: A Guide for Fashion Photographers
In this episode of The Fashion Photography Show, I’m diving into the all-important topic of money blocks and how they impact us as fashion photographers. We'll explore those pesky psychological barriers that hold us back from financial success and chat about practical steps to overcome them.
This is the first episode in our new series focused on money mindset and financial strategies for us creatives.
Introduction to Money Blocks:
Today, I’m talking about money blocks – those subconscious mental roadblocks that stop us from attracting, managing, or keeping money in a positive way.
It’s not about not being good with numbers; it’s about those underlying negative beliefs that we carry without even realizing it.
Common Money Blocks:
Some of the common money blocks we’ll cover include:
These beliefs often come from family, media, friends, and cultural influences. We’ll unpack how they form and stick with us.
Personal Experience:
I’ll share a bit of my own story, like how I believed for years that women didn’t make money and how that affected my career.
It’s all about recognizing and challenging these beliefs to move past them.
Practical Steps to Overcome Money Blocks:
Awareness: Start by writing down your current beliefs about money and really questioning them.
Reframe Beliefs: Turn those negative beliefs into positive affirmations.
Consistent Reinforcement: Make it a habit to revisit and reinforce these positive money beliefs daily.
Positive Money Mindset:
We’ll also talk about the good money beliefs you might already have and how to reinforce them.
When you have a positive money mindset, everything changes – from asking for what you’re worth to attracting the kind of work you want.
Actionable Exercise:
Grab a pen and paper, pause the episode if you need to, and jot down your money beliefs. Let’s challenge and reframe them together.

Impulsive Shooting vs Intentional Shooting: When They're Appropriate.
This weeks' podcast episode is unusual, in that I recorded it whilst out in the woods walking my dog. I had an idea, grabbed my phone, and recorded it as a voice memo. That's why the audio is not as good as usual... but think of it as a voice note from me to you!
It can be so hard to know where the balance shoot be between creative flow, impulse, and planning. How do you get a good balance of one or the other?
I'm hoping that this short and sweet episode will help to answer that question for you.

Side hustles are a big topic amongst photographers, so I wanted to have a chat with my friend Annemarie Sterian about how having multiple income streams benefits us.
