188 | Playwriting (and some BTS Behind the Making of Coco) ft. Octavio Solis

Octavio Solis is among the most celebrated playwrights discussing the Latin American experience, but he wasn't always a writer. Octavio began his artistic journey as an actor-turned-writing-teacher. But when his students started succeeding, he felt an emerging feeling; a need to take his own advice and get to the page.
Since then, Solis has written dozens of celebrated plays, in addition to culturally consulting on Pixar's COCO, which we discuss today.

Honest, Inspiring, and Real

As a professional screenwriter, writing is both my obsession and my main source of income.
Sometimes this can be an exhausting task - a battle fought at the desk, but won in the heart.

For this reason, TSL is one of my favorite podcasts. The hosts are relentlessly honest about the pitfalls of the writing life. And they prove again and again that a good story depends not just on flashy ideas, but on what's vulnerable and unique deep within us.

The unsparing way Lorien, Meg and Jeff share their daily struggles as working writers helps me find a better way to navigate the myriad difficulties of this beautiful and complex profession.

Overall, this podcast is refreshing and inspiring, and a great resource for anyone who is passionate about writing. Highly recommended.
