Welcome to Childcare, WTF -- a podcast breaking down all the BS surrounding the childcare world, with none of the mom-group-parent shaming. A place for real, funny, supportive, helpful conversations, with a lot of swear words thrown in.

Hosted by Tori Ulrich, long-time owner of Chicago Super Sitters - one of the top childcare agencies in Chicago, and Eric Burgher, a new-ish dad who is navigating parenthood and childcare in real time. Together they will discuss how parenting is hard, kids are hard, and childcare everything is HARD. Things like - what childcare do you need, where to find it, how to keep it, how to work in it, how to interact with it once you have found it, how much should it cost, and on and on.

This is NOT a 'HOW to be a parent' podcast (who the hell are we to say whats best for your fam?) We will not be bringing in any "parenting experts" or snooty anybodys that will make you feel badly about yourself as a parent (WTF is up with these people?).

BUT, we will make a small part of parenting easier by sharing helpful childcare info, inside-the-agency-scoops, ridiculous stories, and lots of real, actionable tips (actual tips, not have your kid smell a mason jar with lavender to calm them down during a tantrum, tips). We give you a place to ask your WTF questions, and we'll do our very best to give you some good f'ing answers.

As in YES, you nanny/sitter is human and does need to eat during their 8 hour shift at your house. Or NO, you can't pay your babysitter less if your kid is sleeping. Or YES, male sitters/nannies are absolutely a real option and are totally appropriate.

We can't solve all the childcare problems with this podcast (yet) but we can get a good head start on the WTF stuff now. Join us!

Reading and building connections with children: WTF? With Dr. Glusman and Cindy Ogrin of Reach out and Read

Why TF is reading to children so important? And what is the point of reading to a baby that doesn't know what I'm saying? WTF is the difference between me reading to my kid, or my kid listening to a book on a tablet?
We had the extreme pleasure and privilege of speaking with Dr. Mariana Glusman and Cindy Ogrin of Reach out and Read Illinois, about why reading to children of all ages is so important. We learned SO MUCH about HOW to read to kids, what it can do for their lil brains, and how it build relationships with caregivers.
We also talk about the incredible work of Reach out and Read Illinois, and what they are doing to be sure children are getting books as early as possible. To learn more about their Great Stories Awards Night event and to buy tickets, visit THIS LINK and use code SuperSitters for a huge discount on your ticket!
AND, please check out Dr. Glusman's Book I Love You Like Sunshine which would make an incredible gift for any new or expecting parent.

This week, friend of the WTF Pod Mo Phillps-Spotts interviews Tori about her childcare journey, her fave snack foods, her go-to rainy day activities, and where she thinks the world of childcare is headed. We do things a bit differently this week but it's a fun one.

The .com childcare sites - WTF?

The .com childcare sites - WTF?

WTF is actually going on out on those big sites? How much work does it take to sign up? Are they actually a viable option as corporate backup? and who is regulating this stuff?
Wild ride today y'all. Tori actually signs up as a sitter on a big site DURING the recording of the episode to see what it's like and how long it takes - tune in to see what happens, and if Tori & Eric's guesses were correct.

Making Childcare Accessible (at Events): WTF?

Making Childcare Accessible (at Events): WTF?

WTF is the solution to event childcare? Why is it important? How does it make things more inclusive? Why should events have childcare if not everyone has kids?
This week Tori and Eric discuss the importance of childcare at events, corporate outings, or anywhere where adults need to attend but kids can't (or don't want to). They break down how event successes could hinge on this very thing, and how the event childcare solution might not be as complicated as you think if you jsut COMMUNICATE with the parents on your team.
