    Marietta Advances 90-Home Development

    Marietta Advances 90-Home Development

From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Wednesday, June 26th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.
    Marietta Advances 90-Home Development
The City Council committee has advanced a site plan for the second phase of a 90-home project called The Village at Sandy Plains, with a unanimous 3-0 vote.
This development, spearheaded by David Pearson Communities, spans 15 acres near Kincaid Elementary. The first phase, already approved in April, includes 41 homes. The second phase will complete the project with 49 more homes.
Council member Cheryl Richardson has emphasized concerns about driveway lengths and parking access. The developer has assured that only 27 homes will have driveways shorter than 20 feet and will specify their locations.
In terms of environmental considerations, the developer plans to retain existing evergreen trees and will plant additional canopy trees. They have also committed to contributing to the city’s tree fund.
The Council’s final vote on July 10 will hopefully bring more clarity and collaboration between the developer and the council.

STORY 1: Cobb to Consider Pause on Licensing Health Spas
Cobb County officials are proposing a six-month moratorium on licensing health spas due to concerns over code violations, prostitution, and human trafficking activities reported at local massage parlors. The county's Community Development Department has highlighted evasion of law enforcement by illicit spa establishments as a significant issue. The moratorium aims to halt new licenses while regulations are tightened to address these issues. Recent incidents, such as a sexual assault allegation at a massage parlor, have underscored the need for stricter oversight. Similar measures have been implemented in neighboring cities like Roswell to combat human trafficking. The county hopes to finalize new regulations by November to better manage this industry.
STORY 2: Cobb Elections Board Finalizes Runoff Results
The Cobb Board of Elections unanimously certified results from the June 18 runoff, confirming turnout of 2.49% with 5,750 votes cast out of 231,011 eligible voters across two races. Dr. Jaha Howard won the Democratic runoff for Cobb Board of Commissioners District 2 with 73.07% of the vote, advancing to face Republican Pamela Reardon in November. In the Democratic runoff for Congressional District 14, retired U.S. Army Brigadier Gen. Shawn Harris secured 69% of the vote, setting up a general election contest against incumbent U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
STORY 3: Man Convicted for Cold Case Murder of Father Shot for $50
Dontavian Jones, 22, has been found guilty for the 2016 murder of Dewenzell Spence, 41, in Cobb County. This marks the second conviction in Spence's case, with Terrance Marshall previously sentenced to life without parole. Spence was abducted at gunpoint in Atlanta, forced to withdraw money, then fatally shot in Mableton. His body was discovered in a heavily decomposed state days later. Surveillance footage and facial recognition identified the perpetrators. Senior Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Green described the crime as horrifying and expressed hope for justice in sentencing. Jones faces sentencing on July 15.

Metro volunteers help those stranded in heat find relief at Cobb County cooling centers
Starting Monday, cooling centers will reopen to help residents escape the soaring temperatures. Over the weekend, volunteers like Bryant Plater from MUST Ministries have been out on the streets, offering water and juice and informing people about free bus rides to the cooling center.
Joseph Cook, owner of Cooks Heating and Air, shares how the heat wave has strained older air conditioning systems, leading to increased demand for his services. His team has been working late into the night to keep up with customer calls.
Cobb County has allocated $180,000 to keep the cooling center in Marietta open through September, which has significantly reduced heat-related emergency calls.
The MUST Ministries Cooling Center at 1297 Bells Ferry Road opens on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., providing meals and a cool space for those in need.

Bloody Machete and Fingerprint Found in Slain Woman's Apartment
New details have emerged surrounding the murder of Samantha Woolery. The 42-year-old surgery resident was discovered dead in her apartment last weekend. Police have charged her ex-husband, Mickey Woolery, with multiple crimes including murder.
Surveillance footage captured Mickey Woolery leaving Samantha's apartment with blood on his hands, feet, and pants. Investigators later found a bloody machete and a fingerprint matching Mickey's right thumb at the scene.
Marietta Police, working closely with Carmel, Indiana authorities, tracked Mickey to his home state where he attempted to flee but was apprehended. Samantha Woolery, remembered for her kindness and generosity, will be missed by many. A GoFundMe page started by her daughter has already raised over $47,000 for her funeral. Our thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.

STORY 1: If Cobb’s Commission Map is Thrown Out, Do Richardson’s Votes Stand?
Jerica Richardson's pivotal votes on Cobb County's Board of Commissioners have been contentious due to questions surrounding her eligibility. Richardson's district was redrawn by the Democratic majority using Georgia's home rule powers, a move challenged as unconstitutional by Republicans. This legal uncertainty casts doubt on the validity of her votes and decisions, including approving a transit tax referendum and a housing development. While some legal experts suggest her actions might be protected under the de facto doctrine, which upholds acts performed by officials later found to be improperly elected, the issue remains unresolved. Future court decisions could impact the legality of past votes, potentially leading to significant repercussions for Cobb County's governance.
STORY 2: Marietta School Board Passes Budget with Teacher Raises
The Marietta Board of Education unanimously approved a $159 million budget for the 2024-25 school year, featuring significant teacher raises while maintaining a flat millage rate of 17.97. The budget allocates $9 million towards salary increases and benefits for staff, reflecting an average 5.3% raise for all teaching personnel. Additional funding includes $150,000 for Science of Reading learning programs, $722,000 for academic support staff, and $225,000 for insurance, maintenance, and transportation expenses. Board members expressed satisfaction with prioritizing employee compensation amidst rising living costs, emphasizing their commitment to supporting staff and maintaining fiscal responsibility.
STORY 3: ‘Wild Wild West in Color’ Celebrates Juneteenth with Rodeo
In Marietta, Juneteenth celebrations highlighted both the historical emancipation of African-American slaves and the resilience of Black culture. At Jim Miller Park, the Wild Wild West in Color Rodeo and Agriculture Expo drew thousands, featuring Black cowboys, ranchers, and farmers. Attendees enjoyed Western attire, festive food, and locally grown produce while engaging with vendors and learning about modern farming technologies. The event showcased a rodeo with line dancing, horse riding, and reenactments of famous Black cowboys like Nat Love and Stage Coach Mary, emphasizing their contributions despite historical challenges. Organizers aimed to educate attendees, particularly youth, about agriculture and Black history, ensuring Juneteenth’s legacy endures through cultural celebration and education.

Marietta School Board Passes Budget with Teacher Raises
In a groundbreaking decision, the Marietta Board of Education has unanimously passed its 2024-25 school year budget. Valued at $159 million, this budget includes an average 5.3% raise for all teaching staff. The district's CFO, Erin Franklin, emphasized that $9 million of the $11 million budget increase directly enhances employee salaries and benefits.
Board member Angela Orange expressed her satisfaction, noting the importance of keeping up with the cost of living while maintaining one of metro Atlanta’s lowest millage rates at 17.97. Fellow board member Jaillene Hunter highlighted the prioritization of employees in this year’s budget.
In addition to supporting teachers, the budget allocates funds for Science of Reading programs, general education staff, and increased costs like insurance and maintenance. This move signifies it’s strong commitment to both educators and students in the county.
