It’s easy to get motivated when you have kids and no idea of how to pay your bills.

Open your mouth and share your story.

Just show up. Don’t be the invisible person in the back of the room.

Find meet ups and groups to network with.

Preparation always helps people feel more confident.

Be more outgoing by preparing your story before attending a networking event. Know what you want to be known for.

    Bring your business cards.

Networking is really a form of personal marketing.

It’s an impression game. How many times have people seen you and your name? What is the quality of that impression?

    Marcus’ TEDx Nashville Talk.

You’re going to have to lie to yourself to get over the bias that limit you from doing things your heart tells you to do.

It’s pretty hard to listen to your heart when your mind is telling you the ways you will fail. Tell yourself you’re already the thing you want to be.

[Tweet "Tell yourself you’re already the thing you want to be. @marcuswhitney #nbnradio"]

Remember something that was really great on your down days.

Failure is just part of the process of developing mastery.

It’s not always about winning. It’s about growth, reflection and awareness of how you’re moving towards mastery.

Down days are just days. Days in months, months in years.

    On Moontoast.

Marcus is an avid LinkedIn stalker.

    Networking Tips

Reinventing Your Personal Brand by Dorie Clark

Dorie shares her thoughts about changing your job or career and repositioning yourself.

She sold her bicycle on Craigslist to a copy editor at Harvard Business Review. This led to her opportunity to write for HBR, but she had to ask.

When reinventing yourself be clear on your own narrative. Take control of it. Highlight the strengths you gained previously and how they will provide value in your new position.

Dorie shares some personal pitch tips.

    How to find mentors.

Try to build a mentor board of directors. Find people with areas of specialty that can help you specifically.

    Talking about Stand Out.

How to become recognized as a true expert in your field.

Become a connector and organize an event. Check out Robbie Samuels’ Socializing For Justice.

Dorie recommends Contactually as a great CRM tool to manage your relationships (so do I).

Make it easy for people to connect and find each other at events. Use name tags with “I’m looking for…” for attendees to fill in the blank.

My interview with Contactually’s Zvi Band.

Content creation and inbound marketing is important.

    Wait for seeds to sprout.

It’s 100,000 times more powerful for people to come to you, than for you to come to them with hat in hand.

Read a bunch of things and become knowledgable enough to write about it. You can also do interviews about the topic and write about those. Do it in a way that adds something new to the dialogue.

Your network will build itself, once you’ve built the content that shows people you are worth it.

The first step is to start with your own blog, “establish clips”.

Start by creating your own blog. Here’s my ten minute tutorial.

Use the ladder strategy to move up to better publications.

It’s not how you get in (to a job) it’s what you do once you’re in.

In technology it doesn’t matter where (your position) you get in.

People (in Silicon Valley) do not care about your background.

Enchanting people requires that you are likable, trustworthy and competent. How you communicate that has radically changed because of social media.

    The importance of a smile.
