    Annemarie Ní Churreáin speaks to the C21 Editions project about the role of social media in writing

    Prof. Bridgette Wessels speaks to Irish poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin for the C21 Editions project, which is exploring how born-digital content like social media might be included in digital scholarly editions. Prof. Wessels and Annemarie explore what it means to be w rite in the age of social media. Bridgette Wessels is Professor of Sociology at the University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on the development and use of digital technology and services in social and cultural life. This includes digital services and communication in the public sphere, everyday life and civic life, social and digital inequalities, as well as specific areas such as telehealth, mobile communication and privacy in digital communication. Annemarie Ní Churreáin is a poet from the Donegal Gaeltacht. Her books include Bloodroot (Doire Press, 2017), Town (The Salvage Press, 2018) and The Poison Glen (The Gallery Press, 2021). She is the poetry editor at The Stinging Fly magazine. C21 Editions is an international collaboration between University College Cork, the Digital Humanities Institute at the University of Sheffield, and the University of Glasgow. The project seeks to explore and make a direct contribution to the future of digital scholarly editing and digital publishing. The project was funded under the UK-Ireland Collaboration in the Digital Humanities, a joint initiative of the Irish Research Council (IRC) and the United Kingdom's Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

    Welcome to the final episode of our 3-part series “Men’s Health Table Talk, Nutrition and Cancer related Andropause” by UCC student Dietitians Daniel Coakley and Emma Barrett.   



    So far on this series, we have spoken with RD Katie Johnston who provided us with some very insightful and evidence-based information about the nutritional consequences oftentimes faced by male cancer survivors as a result of their cancer treatment. We also chatted about the changes that occur in body composition along with the importance of evidence-based information when it comes to supplements and potential dietary changes.   

      

    In our second episode, we spoke with coach and personal trainer Aidan Hunter, who provided us with a very personal account of his own journey with cancer having faced testicular cancer twice in his mid 20’s. Aidan’s honest and candid discussion was a powerful reminder of how important early detection and screening is when it comes to cancer prevention.   

      

    For our final episode, we will explore evidence based recommendations to reduce cancer recurrence for male cancer survivors. These guidelines can also be applied to people listening who would like to reduce their risk of cancer.   

    In the second half of this episode, we will be chatting with Health Promotion Officer Shirley O’Shea about her expertise in public health and working with individuals with cancer. Shirly’s main role is centered around physical activity promotion with a special interest in exercise oncology. We explore the current services and support available for male cancer survivors going through or who have been through treatment. We also discuss strategies to encourage more men to access healthcare and health-related services, aiming to break the stigma surrounding men speaking openly about their health.
