Obesity Pandemic: Are kids addicted to food?

The modern world is getting fatter. In the West, our children are the largest generation yet.

But what is at the route of this?

It's common to blame junk food, advertising, too much sugar and fat. But is there something more?

Are we becoming addicted to food? And is it ultimately a personal responsibility, or does the government and the food economy play a larger part than we realised?

Join Nadia and Mark as they discuss all these points and more. In this heartfelt conversation, both discover the role food has played in their lives and how some of these bad habits may have trickled down.

They learn how to positively approach meal times and snacking and discuss the role of the media, advertising, large corporations and governments in keeping us healthy and safe.

I just want a break! Is family harmony an illusion? How to holiday with teens.

I just want a break! Is family harmony an illusion? How to holiday with teens.

"We're all going on a summer holiday" or are we?

This week, Nadia and Mark discuss the thorny subject of bringing your moody teens on holiday with you.

But is that the right way to think of it? Is it their fault they are moody, or should we be considering the needs of the whole family more?

How can we come away from a fortnight with happy memories for everyone and a sense of family harmony? And what age is the right age for our kin to spread their wings and go their own way on holiday? Or should we keep tempting them to join us with free trips as bribes?

Find out the answers to these questions and many more in this episode of Confessions of A Modern Parent.

How Can we parent better? Seven mistakes parents make

How Can we parent better? Seven mistakes parents make

Are you the perfect parent? If you answered yes something is immediately wrong!

We all make mistakes, it's part of how we learn and the rules haven't changed when we approach parenting.

But how aware are we of our habitually poor parenting tendencies?

It could be that we're too busy to really listen to our children, or we tend to lecture and fix things rather than help our kids to sooth themselves.

Maybe we're trying to re-live our young lives and fix our childhood problems?

Our children may choose another path that we know nothing about, so should you forget your dreams of your teenager growing up to be a doctor, or should you double-down?

Nadia and Mark talk to each other about the seven mistakes that parents commonly make, with expert views from leading child psychologists, they compare their parenting approaches with recommended methods and see how they fair. Together they learn the appropriate boundaries to set for our kids, and how to teach them to become communicative, respectful, self-sufficient and aware of their emotions and surroundings.

Nadia and Mark get the final word on how well they have succeeded as parents when they invite their daughter and her friend to give a synopsis on their parenting skills.

"The kids don't stand a chance": Are our kids facing the bleakest outlook ever?

"The kids don't stand a chance": Are our kids facing the bleakest outlook ever?

So much has happened in a relatively short period of time. Since the financial crash of 2007/08, Politics and Economics have been at the centre of our lives. From blanket austerity to a widening gap between the richest and the poorest, our communities and prosperity have paid a heavy toll.

And in more recent times, the rise of the political far right, Brexit, Trump, Boris and now a worldwide pandemic which has brought about the makings of a Global recession and perhaps the worst economic collapse for over three hundred years. These are truly unique times and it is no wonder we all feel lost for answers.

But where are our kids in all this? A whole generation who have been sold the narrative of economic prosperity in return for working hard at school are discovering that life may not be as straightforward for them. How will young people navigate a job market with little or no opportunities, a lack of training and climate of increasing taxes, high rents, unobtainable house prices. And what will this employment gap mean for the rest of us? Will be be able to retire, or will be be bridging the gap until we kick the bucket?

Hear this and much more in this episode of Confessions Of A Modern Parent.
