A Prayer for My Daughter by W. B. Yeats Kenobi Cast

    • Books

William Butler Yeats, in some of his poems, laments the political hatreds of his time.  He was in a pickle because he identified with a lot of Irish nationalist causes and the plight of Ireland under British rule.  But in time he grew weary of his youthful political idealism with its emphasis on violent political struggle with the British.   During his politically idealistic youth, Yeats fell in love with a lovely and loud fiery Irish activist named Maud Gonne.  He thought she was the most gorgeous thing on earth.  But at some point he became disillusioned with the "free Irish" movement due to its embracing of terrorism, rage-centric attitudes, and their pointless dying at the end of British guns.  He also had an epiphany about the effect of mere cosmetic beauty and in his case the thrall it held him under with the beauty of Maud Gonne.  After a series of rejected marriage proposals to Maud Gonne he ended up marrying Georgie Hyde Lees with whom he had a daughter.  He wrote a poem in 1919 occasioned by his daughter entitled "Prayer for my Daughter."
