Bird's Eye View is an unofficial Orioles podcast from the perspective of two die-hard fans. Here, we experience the ups and downs of Orioles baseball, and do our fair share of praising and mocking our beloved team. Our position from the cheap seats helps provide that “Bird’s Eye View.” What we bring is perspective. We offer content that will entertain, (very) occasionally inform, and more often than not, validate a little homerism. When it comes to the Orioles, this is your official source for a lack of insight, and baseless opinion.

    Episode 394: Yankee Shanky

    Leading Off

The Orioles went well beyond a little Yankee Spanky this week, and brought out the shanks. After taking a tough series from the Phils, the Orioles followed up by taking a series from the Yankees – in the Bronx – to draw within a half game of first place. Not enough drama for you? Well, some of the Yankees had big feelings, too.

Deeply saddened by the loss of the legendary Mr. Willie Mays.  His legacy in baseball will forever inspire us.  As Dr. Maya Angelou said, “People will never forget how you made them feel.” Willie Mays made us feel the magic of the game.  Rest in peace. 📷📷 #WillieMays… pic.twitter.com/vC1iXQ2yNj— Maya Angelou (@DrMayaAngelou) June 20, 2024

one startling trend I just found: the last home games pitched by the four O’s pitchers before their injuries that required Tommy John Surgery — came when they wore the City Connect uniforms.Félix: 8/25/23Wells: 4/12/24Means: 5/17/24Bradish: 6/14/24 pic.twitter.com/gEFTFZqYrR— 🇮🇹🤌connor🇮🇹🤌 (@cg_410) June 19, 2024

I wrote that storyline. Everyone said there's no way the Baltimore Orioles and the Maryland Stadium Authority is going to let you film a murder at the tourist jewel that is Camden Yards. Watch and learn, I assured them. Meeting with Orioles and stadium officials goes like this:… https://t.co/bbtMWQePww— David Simon (@AoDespair) June 20, 2024

    Around the Bases

First Base: The Yankees are insufferable

A team of luxury and privilege whined about being pitched to like everyone else in the league. And it was a really bad look for them. In a three game series, the Orioles won on the field and off the field.

    Second Base: Thriving, not surviving

The Orioles had a really difficult June ahead of them. With few off days on the schedule, and some really good teams, things could have gotten ugly. And they were ugly: for everyone else. The Orioles’ worst outcome was a split of a four game series with Toronto. The Orioles had to take on the Phillies and the Yankees in back-to-back series.

And leaving that stretch at 4-2 is not simply surviving those games. The Orioles are thriving.

    Episode 393: Rough Patch

After ANOTHER week away, the guys rejoin the Orioles in the midst of their 9-4 June. With a rough patch up ahead, they argue about patches, and whether the schedule will really be that rough.

    Around the Bases

First Base: State of Starting Pitching

Burnes is an ace. Grayson is a solid #2. Bradish is still holding together. And the rest of the rotation is a major league #3 – #5. And there’s a little depth.

How far can this rotation take this team? And how fragile is the rotation?

    Second Base: Gut Check

This is where the season gets real. Or… is it?

Six games against the Phillies and Yankees could make or break this season. Unless… they don’t? These are big series, to be sure. How will the Orioles respond to the challenge?

Third Base: Getting a conspiracy theory to catch on…

James McCann is catching an awful lot these days. And he’s doing it a lot with Corbin Burnes. AND he’s doing it when Cade Povich makes his MLB debut. WHY?! What does he know?!

    Home Plate: Rough Patch

Jake whines about the T. Rowe Price patches that he calls “sellout badges,” while Scott remains logical about the issue. Coming from different places, they agree that the outcome is negligible.

Episode 392: Let Them Eat Crab Cake

After a week away, the guys are back and better than never. What happened while we’re gone? Well, it can best be expressed by the dulcet tones of Whitney Houston. Not really, but we made the reference anyway. Welcome to Bird’s Eye View.

    First Base: The Streak Ends

The Orioles were finally swept. I mean, they were swept again, because it happened in the playoffs. But in any event, this very specific, very narrow interpretation of a streak has come to an end. And… the Orioles are still good. They’re still a very good team. Maybe THAT can be the story? Not this weirdly specific stat?

    Second Base: Gunnar’s MVP Campaign

Gunnar Henderson is having the type of season that we could only dream about. Stop for a moment, and think about one part of his game that you wish he would improve. We’ll wait.

    Still waiting.

Gunnar is, in short, having a historically good season, and we can’t wait to see how he stacks up against some of the elite players in the leage.

    Now… about that facial hair…

    Third Base: The June Gauntlet

The Orioles can’t buy an off-day in June. They also play a lot of games within the division, and against teams with winning records. But let’s not kid ourselves – no one is looking forward to having to play the Orioles, either. Embrace it – you’re about to be treated to an exciting month of Orioles Baseball.

Home Plate: Quick Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down

We hit a number of topics and give a quick temperature gauge on how we’re feeling. Don’t look now, but we have strong emotions, and strong opinions.

    A BONUS BASE!!!

We take a look at the Orioles’ survey about potential future changes to Camden Yards. Some of these are no-brainers. And some of these are really great, if you are fantastically wealthy.

    First Base: Roster Crunch

We have come accustomed to not having enough talent in the organization. We’ve also become accustomed to talent in the organization being too far away to have a meaningful impact on our hopes and dreams. But now the organization has talent up and down. And difficult decisions are being made. We as fans need to enjoy the guys while they’re here, and understand that the fringe guys might not be here indefinitely – they’re not here on scholarship, anymore.

Second Base: The Next, Next Chapter

The Orioles finally released another episode of The Next Chapter, so Jake can find something else to whine about.

Third Base: Adley Rutchman is good at baseball

Let’s just say that, here at Bird’s Eye View, we have fallen Truly. Adley. Deeply.

    Home Plate: Predictions

In 2023, we predicted that the division was out of reach because the Rays were running away with it. Here in 2024, it looks like the AL East is a two-horse race between the Orioles and Yankees. So… is it too early to predict “who will own it?”

    Status of the Pitching

The Orioles’ pitching staff, despite giving up 9 runs to the Diamondbacks on Sunday, have averaged about 2.86 runs per game in May. On a team with serious star power on the offensive side of the ball, the pitching staff is more than holding up its end of the bargain.

The Baseball Widows make us feel bad for not knowing the things that we ought to know. Additionally, the Magness and English families go head-to-head to see who knows one another better.

Also, Henry could not be more disinterested, and we are so here for it.

    Around the Bases

We go around the bases to discuss:

First Base: What to do about Kimbrel

Our feelings on the subject may surprise you. They may surprise us, too!

    Second Base: The Bench

We talk Ryan McKenna, Jorge Mateo, and Heston Kjerstad. Isn’t it great that we’re arguing over the last couple of roster spots on a winning team?

Third Base: Wednesday’s Game was not fun

The Orioles beat the Nationals, and yet things were awful.

Home Plate: Who is 6’5″ ?

    But why?

    Fantasy Boss

Scott is up 3-2 because Jake was stupid enough to suggest betting on the weather. We have to get serious, so we move on to DONGS!

    Who will own it?

Who had a great week? Who had a tough week? Who made us ashamed to be Orioles fans? Find out in this week’s GB&U.

We made a LOT of jokes at the Yankees’ expense when they whined about how many ballparks a batted ball would/wouldn’t be a homer. This made us wonder “would it dong” about a number of other topics in MLB. Specifically, for how many other teams would this thing be a big deal?
