Born is certified as a Patrol Dog Trainer by the Canine Law Enforcement Accreditation Registry and has served as a tracking judge at the Canadian Police Canine Association National Championships. Born shares his background in law enforcement and canine handling. The gents discuss the puppy program in Canada, the process of raising and training police dogs, the importance of environmental training, and the challenges of testing and selecting puppies. (And Born definitely knows what he’s talking about! He has raised numerous puppies who went on to become successful Police Dogs. Many of the dog teams Born trained competed at the Canadian Police Canine Association National Championships, with several of them winning the “Top Dog” award.) Born shares his selection and training process for the K9 unit, (including the challenges of training in winter conditions ). He also shares his experience with different tracking methods and the integration of evidence recovery in tracking.
Born talks about the retirement of his K9 partner and his transition to starting his own company, Xieko Canine Training, which provides Police K9 Seminars across North America and private pet training to the Edmonton area. He explains his approach to training pet dogs, and the similarities and differences between training pet dogs and working dogs using operant conditioning and positive reinforcement. The conversation touches on the use of e-collars and the controversy surrounding them. Born and the hosts discuss the challenges of working with reactive dogs and the importance of play in training. They also explore the application of pet training methods to working dogs, particularly in tracking.

They discuss Hunton’s background in law enforcement, and his transition from working with bloodhounds to pointy-eared dogs. They also talk about the procurement of bite dogs and the changes in the program. Hunton shares his experiences with his dog, K9 Rico, and their deployments. They touch on the integration of drones and robots in law enforcement and the importance of training and certification. The episode concludes with a discussion on the Georgia Police K-9 Seminar. In this conversation, Hunton shares the story of the incident that led to the death of his police dog, K9 Rico. He discusses the seminar experience, the events leading up to the incident, the search for the suspect, and the tragic loss of K9 Rico. Hunton also talks about the support he received from his department, and the plans for a canine memorial. He emphasizes the importance of letting dogs do their job and offers advice for handlers. Episode 207: Scientifically Speaking, Hemp VS Marijuana
Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sit down with Steven Antommarchi of @nextlevelk9texas about a huge K9 study that aimed to see if marijuana trained dogs would hit on hemp (spoiler alert: yes!) The gents also delve a bit into the mitigation piece of the research as well, so don’t panic! Over the last 15 years, Antommarchi has held the law enforcement titles of Patrol Officer, Canine Handler, Canine Supervisor, Canine Trainer and Interim Chief of Police.
His first encounter with a K9 team was in New York City on September 11, 2001. He witnessed a SAR team fighting through horrible conditions, while overcoming serious injury for the sake of saving lives. That encounter made such a profound impression on him that he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. 15 years later, on July 7, 2016, in Dallas, Texas, K9 Officer Antommarchi found himself in the middle of the deadliest attack on law enforcement since 9/11. Tasked with the responsibility of clearing the downtown area for improvised explosive devices, the reason he got into working K9s came full circle.
Being mentored by Tony Guzman and Robert “Bob” Suarez, Antommarchi is the Founder of Next Level K9 Texas, an Instructor for the Texas School Safety Center at Texas State University and K9 case study trainer for the Global Forensic Justice Center at Florida International University.
Most recently, he became one of the lead trainers and co-designer of the training methodology for a scientific study on “Hemp vs Marijuana.” This study is to evaluate the ability for narcotic detector dogs to discriminate between the odor of marijuana and hemp. The study is being headed by Dr. Kelvin Frank of Florida International University and is in the process of being submitted for publication.
