Disclaimer: Zack and I have played a total of 5 or so games of cEDH between us, so we are by no means experts EDH pushed to the limit, with no compromises made in deck building. All legal cards/combos are fair game, as is stax, etc What is cEDH? We both love EDH, and it felt important for us to educate ourselves on cEDH We don’t plan on becoming Competitive Social or anything like that Since cEDH is part of EDH we wanted to have some experience playing so that we can have a frame of reference when discussing.  Here’s a good link: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/list-multiplayer-edh-generals-by-tier/ We spent a lot of time reading about, and watching videos on cEDH, researched quite a few decks in the meta. http://budgetbrews.club/ Discord: http://budgetbrews.club/#Discord Budget EDH page We thought folks out there might find it interesting if they have never thought about venturing into cEDH territory Why are we doing this episode? Ryan - 4 Color Curious Control, helmed by Thrasios + Vial Smasher http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/4c-rashmi-curious-control/ This Deck was suggested to me by “Someone” from the Spike Feeders via Twitter DM. Maybe Jim??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-KHswpZF1k Video about Curious Control by the Lab Maniacs (Warning, they may have some adult language) Based on: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/urza-paradox-scepter/ Zack’s Version: https://archidekt.com/decks/420449#Urza_Power_Scepter_-_Semi_Budget_(cEDH) Zack - Urza, Power Scepter Let’s talk about the decks we’ve made Played with Austin, and PJ from CommanderReplay https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrudMyVbtvyVyadYddhousA https://twitter.com/CommanderReplay Players Austin was playing Gitrog Zack was playing a borrowed Prosh + Food Chain combo deck PJ was playing a Boros, Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero deck Ryan was playing Curious Control PJ won on turn 4 or 5 with Gerrard, Loyal Retainers, and Grinding Station I had no idea what was going on. Austin was very kind and offered me advice, but a control deck is pretty hard to pilot when you’re not sure what is going on, and what all is possible (Hard to know what to counter, for example) Game 1 Zack was going to get a new pod going, and we were waiting for some players to finish, so Austin, PJ, and I decided to shuffle up for a 3 player cEDH game PJ ended up winning this one is similar fashion, although, I think I did bad things like cast a Fire Covenant at sorcery speed, and countered the wrong spells, and basically stifled Austin (playing Gitrog), and was essentially king maker Game 2 Games we played at Mothership Ryan Man, I am BAD at this format. I think a lot of this is unfamiliarity, and I’m sure that will come with time. It’s really interesting to play with all of these crazy combos/busted cards that I don’t normally play with, at least not in this density in my decks I feel like there is potentially more shuffling than in a normal game, because so much of the game is DEPENDANT on your starting hand. I think this is true because in a regular game of EDH, there is more time for you to play catchup, and often time folks will leave you alone if you’re mana screwed. That being said, being able to play a whole game in under half an hour is pretty sweet Fighting battles on the stack is pretty interesting, and not something w

Is Fast Mana Bad for Commander? - Ep 40

Is Fast Mana Bad for Commander? - Ep 40

Disclaimer: We are not saying fast mana is good/bad/or otherwise. We just thought this is an interesting topic, and might be fun to talk about. Permanent Sol Ring Mana Crypt Mana Vault Ancient Tomb Grim Monolith Carpet of Flowers (Is this as good in non cEDH?) Chrome Mox Mox Diamond Mox Amber Mox Opal There’s lots of temporary mana cards, often used in storm decks Lotus Petal Lion’s Eye Diamond Dark Ritual Desperate Ritual Temporary What is Fast Mana? Cards that can give you more mana than they cost, the turn you play them Land, Fellwar Stone, Mana Vault, Sylvan Library Land, Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Sensei’s Divining Top Are crazy starts like this bad?  How often do starts like this happen? Do crazy starts happen like this all the time in cEDH? We don’t know, but maybe some folks out there can let us know? What’s the craziest start YOU’ve ever had? Fast Mana can enable some pretty crazy starts http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/list-multiplayer-edh-generals-by-tier/ Is fast mana one of the things that separates EDH from cEDH? We aren’t cEDH experts, but looking at the tier list here, it sees a lot of play in cEDH decks: Is this fair, given that nearly every EDH deck runs Sol Ring? Most of the cards on this list are more than $50, some as much as $200+   If Mana Crypt were less expensive, would this argument still be happening? I’ve seen some folks on Twitter/Reddit complaining about their opponents using fast mana, oftentimes Mana Crypt is specifically called out. Does the way your deck is built change the amount of fast mana that is “appropriate”? If you’re playing Bird Tribal, is it OK to power up your deck with a little extra juice? How much fast mana is too much? http://bit.ly/ryan_stable http://bit.ly/zack_stable Example: Ryan has a morph deck, and it’s pretty derpy. That deck runs a lot of fast mana, just so it can be on a similar playing field as a lot of other decks Ryan plays against in our meta Zack talks about Emry here I don’t think running fast mana is good or bad, it’s just a thing decks can do. We play fast mana sometimes. Feel free to look at our stables: Ryan has a Gonti Deck, and it runs mana vault, but maybe that should just be Dark Ritual? Mana vault vs Dark Ritual Ryan: I think that in general the effect is pretty similar, but again fast mana ramps you for the current turn, whereas Ramp cards make subsequent turns of yours better. At least the social contract doesn’t frown on blowing up folks fast mana, like it does about destroying lands How does Fast mana compare to Ramp effects like Rampant Growth, Kodama’s Reach, Cultivate? Cards like Signets, Worn Powerstone, Fellwar Stone, etc Why are these cards less frowned upon? We run lots of “Slow Mana” in Commander, which essentially acts a lot like ramp Main Topic - Fast Mana Thanks for watching! I’ve always loved drawing cards and being able to do damage to others was something I totally loved.  I don’t claim to be great at building decks, but back then the way I built decks was way different than I do now. I didn’t exactly do slot theory and it was mostly just slam in good cards and hope for the best.  I was doing pretty well with it for a while, but as time went on and I added more cards just for the heck of it the deck got worse and kind of fell out of favor.  Near the end of 2019 I had been trying to make a draw-all-the-cards and take-all-the-turns type deck. At first I thought this would be a good strategy for Emry, but then realized, hey why not revisit Niv Mizz. The new theme for niv was Draw all the cards, take all the turns, and wheels. I have played five games with Niv since I have revamped and won all five.  Niv Mizz, the Parun 1 Dictate of Kruphix Didn't love the symmetrical nature 1 Experimental Frenzy Didn't love how it played 1 Merchant Scroll removing tutors 1 Firemind's Foresight Never really knew what to fetch 1 Palinchron slotted in thinking i'd do a combo, but never did  1 The Mirari Conjecture didn't love how it played 1 Venser, Shaper Savant didn't love how it played  Cards I took out and why: 1 Arcane Signet Mana Fixing 1 Dictate of the Twin Gods double damage from things like commander and psychosis crawler 1 Expropriate Moar Turns 1 Insurrection Win Condition 1 Leyline of Anticipation Love instant speed everything 1 Mind's Eye Cheap Card Draw 1 Nexus of Fate Moar Turns 1 Thought Reflection Double Card Draw Double Damage 1 Torbran, Thane of Red Fell Extra Damage 1 Windfall Wheels 1 Dockside Extortionist Ryan said it was good Cards I added and why With the stable I can see what cards I’ve added and if something new doesn’t feel right you can always see what you removed. Decks need to have good synergies in them, not just combos or combos at all. Also just because a card is good, doesn’t mean it’s great for every deck.  What is the deck you’ve revamped the most? Did it work out for you? We want to know. Summary Main Topic - Updating your decks Thanks for watching / listening!  Keep it Social!
