50 Nexus 'Vet health care' x 'Indigenous communities'

50 Nexus 'Vet health care' x 'Indigenous communities'

For this episode I even had the luck to speak with 5 people. All five going to be part of one of the sessions of the Summit for Animals, who will take place in Halifax, Canada, from May 6-7. The Summit for Animals is the largest conference for the animal welfare sector in Canada and hosted by Humane Canada (link), the national federation of humane societies and SPCAs (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals), and the convener of animal welfare in Canada. The summit has been held for 10 years already, every year in a different city. This May will be the 11th edition and the first time hosting it in the east cost of Canada. They have 10 educational topics at the Summit, everything from leadership, tackling fatigue and building resilience, to companion animals, wild and farmed animals and access to care; with 40+ sessions and over 65 speakers.

In this episode we will talk about the last topic with the focus on marginalised and rural communities: 'partnering with indigenous communities to increase access to veterinary care'. We talk about the reasons why access to veterinary care is so difficult for indigenous communities. You will hear different experiences on the fundamental challenges faced by the communities in terms not only of animal welfare and on developing context-specific services, but above all how important it is as an organisation to take time to build relationships of trust.

48 Animal Welfare in the curriculum

    Some more English....

This time I talk to Wendy Phillips and Carolin Breitenbach. Both are veterinarians and together run the programe VETS UNITED by a german charitable animal welfare foundation. Wendy worked as a veterinary practicioner and project manager for various animal welfare organisations in Asia, Africa and Europe, before starting VETS UNITED in 2015. Carolin
joined her in 2017, after working in small animal medicine for several years. We talk about their work at WTS (Welttierschutzstiftung), what it needs to include animal welfare into the veterinary curriculum in countries all over the world, how young and passionate people can change the system and how important language is when it comes to making teaching material accessible. But we also answer a few more questions.
