Out of sight, out of mind. We don’t see the greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming when we bite into a hamburger. We don’t see the groundwater leaching from landfills after the garbage truck turns the corner. We don’t see a planet suffering from human exploitation —rather a convenient resource, ready to give and be acknowledged once every 365 days.
The Happy Earth Day podcast offers an alternative way of understanding the consequences of our everyday actions via a series of interview from around the world. It serves to not only educate but also challenge us to continue these conversations outside of the show with others in our community.
Season 1 is all about the ways we connect to our planet whether it’s through technology, science, policy, music, religious faith, culture, food, history, etc. and seeing the ways in which these perspectives develop in different regions of the world. I hope these stories inspire you to cultivate your own connection with the natural world and bring change to your communities.

Interview with Indian music composer Ricky Kej at his home in Bangalore India. Ricky is a Grammy award winner and US Billboard #1 artist. He uses the language of music to inspire policy makers and communities to make sustainable changes. Ricky is most well known for his recent album “Shanti Samsasra” which was launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Hollande at the UN COP21 Climate Change Conference in 2015. The album is a compilation of works with over 500 musicians in over 40 countries. The album touches on narratives including the human elephant conflict, the island nation of Kiribati going under water, the biodiversity of the Maldives, and many more. We will be discussing these themes as well as the role of music in implementing policy and behavioral change at the local and federal level.

In this episode I will be interviewing Swami Vishnumayananda who runs the Ramakrishna Mission Branch in Shivanahalli Village near Bangalore. We will be discussing the new school they have implemented that focuses on giving students an education paired with environmental consciousness by providing them a hands on learning experience with nature. We will also be discussing how their belief in religious harmony and community building originates from the natural world as seen in the biodiversity of the 80 acre forest surrounding the school.
