My wife and I love going to the movies.  We especially love movies based on true stories.  Last week we went to see a new release.   The Boys in the Boat.   While the details of the story are entertaining, it is the way this story illustrates the power of connection that I want to share today.

The topic of respect comes up a lot  in my work with parents.   I hear statements like…

 

My son doesn’t respect me.

My daughter won’t respect anything I say.

I am writing this on January 2, 2024.  The start of a new year is typically considered a time for fresh starts.  This is when we look back over our life and identify opportunities for growth. We excitedly layout plans for accomplishing personal and professional goals. 

 

Unfortunately, by the first of February many of us will struggle to keep the momentum going.  The initial energy burst has faded and our enthusiasm begins to wane.   And Just like that old habits creep back in.   Six months later we find ourselves in the exact same place we were back on January 1st.

I have been reviewing the 5 Love Languages of Children.  In the last couple of chapters there is some discussion about discipline and the parent’s role as a teacher of their child.   In my work with parents this topic raises a lot of questions.

 


 How do I get my child to follow the rules?
 What is the best way to discipline a child?
 How to discipline a child that won't listen?
