They're free, and for many people they're vital for health and happiness. Yet one in ten of us can't remember the last time we got one. We're talking hugs and it seems, as a nation, we're snuggle-sparse and in need of more!

According to research published today by Forever Friends, 1 in 3 Brits say they crave more hugs in their life. The UK's stiff upper lip and traditionally reserved nature get the blame for this by a quarter of those questioned. And 10% of Brits admit for them hugging just doesn't come naturally.

But for those who do indulge in the habit of hugging, a stingy 25% save up their hugs for special occasions. And over half of Brits vote the best hug to get is from a partner.

Hug Etiquette*
• Hold on tight: a firm hold best conveys a genuine hug, the most satisfying hug always ends with an extra supportive squeeze
• Time waits for no man: the most common concern for men is how long to maintain the grasp. This is a tricky one to judge and largely depends on the person and the situation. Be careful not to overdo it but bear in mind too short could leave it feeling lacklustre
• Any time, anyplace, anyone: Don’t restrict your hugs to close friends and loved ones – approachable colleagues and those clearly in need really will appreciate an empathetic embrace – but be sure to ask permission first!
• Commit to the clinch: remember, a half-hearted hug is worse than no hug at all. Say it like you mean it, don’t hesitate as a ‘limp lift’ suggests a fake
