Help for Babies With Low Iron Levels

Help for Babies With Low Iron Levels

In this episode, a parent shares that at a recent pediatrician visit with her 9 month old son, the doctor mentioned that his iron was low. The pediatrician went on to recommend that this mother reduce the amount of breastmilk and increase the amount of food she offers her son to compensate for the low iron levels. She is concerned with this advice as she thought that breastmilk should be the main source of calories for her 9 month old. She is confused about whether or not to change her feeding routines with her son, and is looking for advice.

    In-Laws and Night Feeding

    In-Laws and Night Feeding

In this episode, a parent writes in about concerns with her in-laws and their their differing opinions on how she should feed her 7 month old. They have shared their opinions with her about everything from when to feed her baby to whether she should allow him to nurse over night. Her in-laws are concerned that when her son is served solid foods in the morning, he tends not to show interest. They are persistent in telling her that her son needs to be able to sleep through the night at this age and will not do so unless she stops feeding him each time he wakes up. They also insist that he should be fed a proper breakfast, lunch, and dinner and that breastmilk is nothing more than a snack. This parent is unsure how to handle this situation and is second guessing whether her initial approach is right or wrong.

Whether you've been staying at home for a few weeks or just starting, there is no doubt that this has been, and will be, a challenging time for all of us. In this episode, I try to get to the bottom of some of the issues you may be experiencing during this time in close quarters at home. I go through a few of the most common feeding issues that I have heard from parents, and even share some tips and tricks I have put into use already. All to try to provide some clarity on how to handle them over these next few weeks or months. I'm also helping you brainstorm some meals that you can make with common pantry staples we all have been stocking up on. These are not normal times. She describes how her son is choosing what he is served for breakfast every morning, but that he is very inconsistent with the amount that he eats. When he refuses to eat what is served even after asking for it, she is unsure whether to offer her toddler other items or simply let him wait until the next feeding opportunity as she worries that he will be hungry before snack. She has been giving him other options to try to get him to eat, but she describes how the family is getting frustrated at this constant pattern and waste of food. She is at her wits end and is looking for some guidance on how she should address this.

    How to Handle Desserts

    How to Handle Desserts

A parent shares her concerns about how to serve dessert to her child so that it remains on a neutral footing with other foods and her child doesn't become obsessed with it. She mentions that she has a good routine at home, however when at her weekly extended family meals, dessert is always served after the main portion of the meal. She is worried that this may encourage her child to place a higher value on desserts, and is looking for advice on how to approach this.
