Episode 14 - The Dylan H. Interview (Helicopters)

In Episode 14 of Stick Talk, I interview my very good friend, Dylan Horn. Dylan and I met our freshman year of college at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University as he was beginning his helicopter training with Universal Helicopter Institute. Dylan and I bonded over our mutual passion for things without wings and I have learned so much about the differences between rotary and fixed wing flight from him.

Dylan and I discuss his journey through initial flight training, his time as a CFI/CFII, and his decision to become a tour pilot after the demise of UHI. If you haven't heard of UHI, they are a classic case of how mismanagement, greed, and poor company culture can make unlimited profit go 100-0 real quick.

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday January 26th as a Sikorsky S-76B model helicopter crashed near Calabasas, CA killing all occupants. My thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones, and fans of the deceased; Payton Chester, Sarah Chester, Christina Mauser, Alyssa Altobelli, Keri Altobelli, John Altobelli, Gianna Bryant, Kobe Bryant, and Ara Zobayan. Dylan and I discuss the facts we are aware of thus far that might have played into the helicopter going down, including external pressures and IMC conditions. Here is the ATC audio from the accident:

Dylan and I also discuss a great resource for helicopter education and a VERY cute copilot. youtube.com/watch?v=BTqu9iMiPIU

    Episode 13 - The Jonas W. Interview

    Episode 13 - The Jonas W. Interview

Jonas is BY FAR one of the most passionate aviation enthusiasts I have ever met. His love for the craft is pure and authentic, and I am yet to meet another individual who receives as much joy from the industry as him. In this interview, Jonas talks about discovering his passion for aviation, his journey throughout flight training, an infamous (but awesome and extremely effective) instructor whom we had in common for our Commercial Multi-Engine course, and his internship with the "Pilot Source Study". This study that Jonas had the opportunity to be a part of is huge for young up-and-coming pilots, as they studied thousands of applicants that were ultimately offered jobs at regional airlines and the details of their backgrounds that allowed them to achieve this milestone. What's the best way to get to the airlines? Military? 141? ATP? ERAU? Find out here!

    Episode 10 - The Mik Q. Interview

Mik is an outstanding pilot currently working on her Commercial-Single Engine rating. She is heavily involved with the National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) working to enhance diversity and inclusion in the aviation industry. It is no secret that aviation is a white heterosexual male dominated industry that has not always offered minorities the same opportunities and respect. Mik describes her experience at a recent Diversity Summit hosted by NGPA and offers her insight as to how we can enhance safety in the cockpit through devices like "Professional Standards" and avoiding microaggressions.
