    A Teacher’s Perspective

    A Teacher’s Perspective

In this final episode Season 1 of Stuttering Since ’02, Jared sits down for a conversation with Polly Martin, who was his chemistry teacher for two years. They talk about what it’s like to have a student in class who stutters, and some of the ways Ms. Martin adapted her expectations of Jared in class because of his stutter. This is the first time Jared and his teacher have discussed his stutter since he met her at the start of Tenth Grade, and there are a few surprises for Jared – and lots of laughter – as they share their perspectives on his in-class experience.

As the only family member with personal experience stuttering, Poppy brings a very personal perspective to his grandson’s stutter and was instrumental in Jared making the decision to return to speech therapy after a break of a few years. Jared concludes their conversation by asking Poppy to share his advice to other grandparents of children who stutter.

    How Times Have Changed

    How Times Have Changed

Before podcasts, the Internet and conventional understanding of speech pathology, it was a very different experience for young people who stuttered. A family friend who has watched Jared on his journey also grew up with a stutter. It was a completely different era, though, and Kevin faced bullying, misunderstanding and a dearth of resources compared to what is available today. Two of his three children also stutter, and Kevin shares his unique perspective as a person who stuttered and a parent of kids who stutter.
