S2E5: Understanding the role of a destination manager

S2E5: Understanding the role of a destination manager

In a nutshell, a destination manager’s job is to grow GetYourGuide’s presence around the world. Working closely with suppliers to get their products and services onto our platform, each destination manager owns their destination and represents the brand in their respective locations. Julia Randow, director of sales APAC and GM Dubai, and Iwona Kurczab, a former GetYourGuide business recruiter, provide us with further insight into destination managers’ roles and how they’re recruited into the team.
As both Julia and Iwona discuss in this episode of Talented, one of the most important skills for a destination manager is the ability to think like the customer. It’s all about helping people have incredible experiences, so understanding certain needs and embracing change in an incredibly fast-moving market is vital.
Based in Dubai, Julia is the director of sales in APAC. She describes the variety of her role and how getting to test the product first-hand injected a lot of fun into her routine. We also discuss some of the necessary and not so necessary skills you’ll need to be a success. And guess what? A lack of travel experience isn’t a deal-breaker.
As Iwona explains, if a candidate shows a strong motivation to succeed, they’ll immediately catch the recruiter’s eye. She also recommends being well prepared for the interview as a little extra knowledge always goes a long way (check out our blog Inside GetYourGuide for lots of useful talking points ;)).

S2E4: Everything you need to know about category management

S2E4: Everything you need to know about category management

So what exactly is category management within the tours and experiences industry? How does it differ from category management in other industries? Whether you’re interested in a new career direction or preparing for an interview with us, this deep dive offers everything you need to know.  Philipp Krautenbacher, director of category management, and Lisa Hsieh, former senior tech recruiter at GetYourGuide, answer some of the most popular questions and misconceptions about the dynamic field.

Day tours, museum visits, transportation services — these are all categories at GetYourGuide. Category management for tours and activities differ from other travel-focused industries. For example, flights typically only have one type of category (flights) while hotels typically have one category:hotels.

The beauty of having various categories in tours and activities, as Philipp explains in the episode, is that they are entirely different in how they are managed. There’s a different supplier, technology, logistic, and overall complexity of the purchase. Category management covers those differences and sets each category up for success.

The hiring manager and recruiter reveal how candidates can better prepare for their interviews. Lisa reveals what skills and past experiences pique her interest while Philipp walks us through what a typical day in his team looks like, the KPIs they measure, and their big picture goals.

S2E2: An inside look at the data analytics hiring process

S2E2: An inside look at the data analytics hiring process

Data analysts help the company take action based on numbers. Besides a technical test, how do you best communicate your skills to a hiring manager and recruiter? Triston Cossette, director of analytics, and Steve Rose, senior tech recruiter, walk us through the interview process for data analyst roles and drop hints on how to ace the interview.
For this episode of Talented, our guests take listeners through the technical and soft skills that a candidate needs to shine in an interview and separate themselves from their resume. The key here is business acumen and good communication. Yes, you have to nail the technical test execution, but analytics roles require looking at a business problem, solving it, and explaining those solutions to non-technical people.
As a recruiter who does the first screening and walks the candidate throughout the entire experience, Steve uses his air time to answer commonly asked applicant questions. He reveals the three key things he looks for in a screening.
The hiring manager and recruiter also give us a candid look inside their working relationship and how they synergize to bring the best possible candidates on board. Triston and Steve speak about how their hiring process has laid the groundwork for a strong team. Learn how their collaborative approach has contributed to the historically low turnover in our engineering and data product teams.
