In this month's The New Audio Podcast, iZotope’s Community Manager Sean Greenhalgh and Product Specialist Geoff Manchester interview a pair rarely found in the wild together: a mix engineer and a mastering engineer. More specifically, Brooklyn Producer/Engineer Aaron Bastinielli (Noah Cyrus, Matt and Kim, The Roots, Bono, and The Hold Steady) and his mastering partner in crime, LA Mastering Engineer Michelle Mancin (Fitz and The Tantrums, Portugal The Man, Fifth Harmony, Jessie J, and Noah Cyrus). These two have spent many years enhancing and finishing each other’s musical ideas. Sean and Geoff chat with them about the careful conversations between mix and mastering engineers, achieving depth and dynamics in their work, as well as touching on how male engineers might be allies to female engineers in audio production.

Alright audience, kick back, relax and be whisked away to the magical world of The New Audio Podcast.

    Episode 13: Harry Shearer

    Episode 13: Harry Shearer

Our guest this month is the inimitable Harry Shearer, an actor, comedian, bassist, musician et al whose voice you’ve definitely heard if you’ve ever watched an episode of The Simpsons. Harry also starred as bassist Derek Smalls in what is perhaps the most influential comedic movie of all time, Spinal Tap. Besides inventing the mockumentary format alongside his co-star Christopher Guest, the members of Spinal Tap wrote their own hilarious, satirical songs in a takedown of rock’n’roll pomposity and self-importance of the early 80’s. As the voice of a handful of iconic cartoon series, The Simpsons, greatest characters (Mr. Burns, Smithers, Flanders, and Principal Skinner) Shearer cemented his place in American pop culture for good. These days Harry hosts his own podcast, Le Show, lives in his adopted city of New Orleans, and is about to release a new star-studded Derek Smalls album. We talked to Harry about the creative links between comedy and music, dealing with performance anxiety, and even Wayne's World II. Oh, and he loves iZotope plug-ins! Excellent!

In this months Can/Am Games segment, co-hosts Sean and Geoff get into it over using 4 tracks versus using infinite tracks in one’s recordings. And on our Song Imploder segment, our two hosts finally agree about something in their discussion of the production of Radiohead’s recently released b-side “I Promise” from OK Computer.

Episode 12: Guy Lawrence from Disclosure

In the latest episode of The New Audio Podcast, iZotope stalwarts Sean Greenhalgh and Geoff Manchester interview Guy Lawrence from the UK house duo, Disclosure. Guy has some great insights about learning production through his use of Ozone, throwing out the music production rule-book, and even calls out VocalSynth as being a cool new tool. Later in the show, Sean and Geoff bicker, er, debate drummers vs. drum machines and even weigh in on the new Kendrick Lamar track "Pride" (off of his newest album, Damn) which was produced by 18 year old phenom Steve Lacy using his iPhone. There's tons of #content here, so dig in!
