Tricky Conversations Sandra and Sally
-
- Gesellschaft und Kultur
Sandra and Sally are good friends. But their life experiences are very different. Sandra is black, Sally is white. Sandra is straight, Sally is lesbian. Until now they have simply accepted and welcomed their differences but in these podcasts they talk for the first time about identity and discrimination. Prompted by Black Lives Matter to make their own contribution to change, Sandra and Sally show that it’s possible to learn from each other with good humour and courage.

1. Who am I?
Answering this question is never straightforward. What matters most? What remains hidden? Sandra and Sally explore the intricacies of identity.

2. Where are you from?
Sandra and Sally are both South Londoners, but where are they really from? Should the question ever be asked?
-
3. Can you see me?
As a lesbian, Sally must choose whether to come out in every new encounter, whether it’s with colleagues or the gas man. Sandra, on the other hand, has never had to come out as a black woman! She has to face people's assumptions based on stereotypes. They talk about the effort it takes to be seen as an individual.

4. If only......
Challenging bad behaviour is hard. Sandra and Sally talk honestly about their experiences of being at the sharp end of other people’s prejudice, and the decisions they make about whether to speak up.

5. Passing the baton
The final conversation of the series and the trickiest of all for Sally and Sandra. In their view, what does the future hold?
