Episode 0: Welcome to Be the L19ht

I want to make the world a better place.

Over the next year, I will be working on the Google Innovator project that I am passionate about in order to complete the Google Innovator Program. As a part of the program, educators create and carry out a transformative project. The project is based on a problem that we see in education. The problem that I see in education is that our youth are struggling with mental health issues more now than ever. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), 17% of high school students have seriously considered suicide, 50% of children ages 8-15 experiencing a mental health condition don't receive treatment, and 1/2 of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14. Over the next year, I will be working to create and carry out my project. I wish to give our youth hope that things can get better.

My goal is to help the members of our community by compiling a book of short stories from people all over the world who describe their journey through difficult times and the positive ways and resources they used to get through those challenges. The book will be titled: Be the Light.

Many people struggle with Addiction, Anxiety, Color, Depression, Grief, Identity, Race, Religion, and Sexual Orientation. People don't talk about these topics for fear of judgment or repercussions. I want these stories to provide hope for those that may be struggling in a similar way. I want others to see that we are more alike than different. I want to make the world a better place by bringing us together.

I would love nothing more than for this book to remove the barriers and allow us to start talking about the topics that are currently taboo. I want us to Be the Light!

These struggles may have been experienced firsthand, as a parent, a friend, a relative, etc. I would love stories from people of all ages and walks of life!
