e9 (11/17/19) Sportsball Team Owners are just Boneless Landlords w/ Slick, Chubs, & Don Quixote

hello 'all.' BOY do we have a treat for you!!
in today's ~long~ installment of the Appalachia Wellness Center program four1111s embarks on a lil field trip to 'the south' to catch up with some old chums/new wellness center staff members. our 4 heroes discuss how no matter how much you don't want them to be, sports ARE political. we use that premise to explore the economic aspect of the industry, how sports team owners are actually just landlords in disguise, and why successful sports franchises really don't need to have an owner to succeed - much like how you really don't need a landlord in order to live somewhere and you really don't need a boss in order to work and produce value for society. buckle up for some fierce debate and red hot takes, all for the low low price of $0.00.

e8 (10/27/19) a SpEcTrE iS HaUnTiNg hEaLtHcArE part 2 - The Individualisation of Struggle

welcome back to our 2-part special on the healthcare industrial complex... part 2. today four1111s returns to center on an important piece of neoliberal capitalist logic - the individualisation of struggle - which tells us that our actions alone determine our future, while ignoring the collective economic shitstorm of struggle that plays a much bigger role in the poisoning of our social relations in general. drinking more water and meditating for 10 minutes a day won't make your job any more bearable. going vegan and hunting down every single plastic straw for destruction won't curb the real contributors to climate change. how do we understand the struggle for the improvement of society as a collective one? how do we connect healthcare justice with housing justice? with reproductive justice? with food justice? capitalism has its claws in every aspect of our world, and we cannot interpret anything in a vacuum. it's all connected - just like each and every one of us - even when we're alone at home in the dark playing The Outer Worlds in our underwear.

so basically we r back ,

after a (regretful) 4 month hiatus, four1111s has returned for an admittedly far less joke-y solo episode. this is part 1 on the healthcare industrial complex, its immense flaws, its destructive capabilities, and how it relates to healthcare workers and affects our relationships with our patients. we explore this topic through the lens of a hypothetical Socialist Hippocratic Oath - something that doctors can actually be proud of; something that centers patient care; something that goes beyond just medicare4all. appalachia wellness center is back baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love u.

    [correction]
-physician-assisted suicide/death is where the physician only prescribes the medication that leads to the patient’s passing - but the patient needs to be physically able to take the medication themselves
-euthenasia is when a physician actively participates in the patient’s death - so the physicians themselves will prescribe AND administer the medication that will lead to the death of the patient.

    e6 (6/7/19)THIS Reality Bites BACK w/ Emily

ok so basically it's episode 6. EB is back in the Wellness Center with some takes on how reality TV is sometimes trash but can sometimes shape discourse.
television is a primary source of capitalist propaganda in the West. the things we consume, especially entertainment and media, shape our existence and how we interact with our friends, family, and communities at large. how can we take this fact and turn it on its head in order to promulgate a popular Leftist political-economic program? or at the very least, how can we inject our own theory and practices into the mainstream in a way that is relatable, consumable, and entertaining? why is there so little leftist representation in the media in the first place? dam it's kina wack if u think about it.

we also talk about a few shows that we feel /do/ in some ways challenge popular notions of what should/should not be discussed on TV. if yall got other examples let us know and we'll be sure to check em out. plz dont say game of thrones

    e5 (5/12/19) My Big Fat (Agri)cultural Wedding feat. twelve888888888888s

happy sunday you little shits, it's time for episode 5!!!! today we introduce yet another new Wellness Center staff member - Ash, AKA twelve888888888888s (u cant make this shit up).
the topic of the day is food, something we all know, love, and need. we unravel the "Green Revolution" of the 50s and 60s and learn how the shift from small local farms to corporate agribusiness only nominally improved our lives. these new hypercapitalist farming practices, where a few giant corporate farms now own and control thousands of acres of land (and all the productive forces that go into the actual process of making food), have not only wreaked havoc on the environment, small farmers, and our communities downstream, but also have implications for our health. the rise of calorie-dense, high sugar, high fat, nutritionally-deficient foods may be much cheaper to make, but the correlation between the Green Revolution and the increasing incidence of high cholesterol, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and so on (not to mention the ballooning healthcare costs related to these chronic diseases) is something we need to start talking about and making more visible in public discourse.

on a somewhat brighter note, we went to a wedding! it was magnificent and grand, but not undeserving of critique of the broader 'wedding-industrial complex.' do you want to get married? do you want to have a wedding? there are no right answers, but there's plenty to be suspicious of when it comes to this decidedly expensive but momentous occasion.

e4 (4/28/19) White Men Be Oppressing w/ Emma & Karey

e4 (4/28/19) White Men Be Oppressing w/ Emma & Karey

sup!! we welcome two new Wellness Center staff members this week: Emma and Karey!
in today's installment, we talk about the origins of some of the structural hierarchies that dominate our lives - primarily patriarchy and white supremacy - and connect our experiences with them as we've grown over the years, as well as to the different places we’ve lived. we also discuss how things like the #MeToo movement have changed how we interact with others, and not necessarily for the better.

capitalism and the State apparatus, together with the help of the Church, have been the primary driver of the ongoing phenomenon of “primitive accumulation” since the enclosure of the Commons and the end of the "feudal stage of history." women were particularly affected by this transition from feudalism to capitalism, as they disproportionately lost much of their previous autonomy (and lives) thanks largely to the witch-hunts in Western Europe/18th-19th century New England. they quickly became displaced from the land and their traditional practices through State repression, making the surviving women alienated non-owners.
the invention of the nuclear family, along with the propagandizing of heteronormativity/violent repression of LGBTQ+ people, created the conditions for women to have no choice but to become dependent on men. a power dynamic was constructed that included women, who from then on existed chiefly as domestic laborers and "people who be shopping" (PwbS), and men, who existed as “breadwinners” and therefore owners of money, aka power. this largely explains the disparity between men and women in possession of/access to capital and wealth, in a society still rampant with misogyny.
we also know that similar conditions exist across race, seen through the construction of a racial hierarchy which attempts to justify the exploitation of & violence toward black and indigenous people of color (BIPOC). colonialism, enslavement, and genocide of the indigenous nations and African captives, which eventually gave way to neocolonialist forms of exploitation via red-lining, wage/prison slavery, Jim Crow, gentrification, and gerrymandering, has dispossessed millions of BIPOCs, with economic, political, and social disparities on full display in society.

“Before the advocates of positive whiteness remind us of the oppression of the white poor, let me say that we have never denied it. The United States, like every capitalist society, is composed of masters and slaves. The problem is that many of the slaves think they are part of the master class because they partake of the privileges of the white skin. We cannot say it too often: whiteness does not exempt people from exploitation, it reconciles them to it. It is for those who have nothing else.”

“The white race is neither a biological nor a cultural formation; it is a strategy for securing to some an advantage in a competitive society. It has held down more whites than blacks. We hold that so-called whites must cease to exist as whites in order to realize themselves as something else; to put it another way: white people must commit suicide as whites in order to come alive as workers, or youth, or women, or whatever other identity can induce them to change from the miserable, petulant, subordinated creatures they now are into freely associated, fully developed human subjects.”
