Doing Traveling Village without remote work and halfway reflections with Marianne | S2 EP9

Halfway through Traveling Village 3, Asha calls in to talk with Marianne, a Norwegian mom traveling with her husband and four-year-old daughter. Unlike many others, they are not working remotely during the trip, which shapes both the experience and the trade-offs they are making. They talk about what it actually feels like once the first excitement settles and everyday life in the village begins to take shape.

The podcast follows 20 families as we travel together through Vietnam, Taiwan, and South Korea as a village. This season, Asha, who joined Traveling Village 1, calls in every week to talk with different people on the trip and follow along from afar. Each episode is around 20 minutes and is meant to give an honest, grounded sense of what village life feels like as it unfolds.

In this ninth episode, they talk about:

  • Choosing to join Traveling Village without remote jobs and committing fully to the experience
  • Making it work financially by renting out their home and accepting the trade-offs
  • Why community is the best part of the experience and also the most demanding
  • Being introverted in a highly social setting and learning to protect time alone
  • A four-year-old navigating language barriers and still finding ways to connect
  • A tough start in Vietnam with illness and how that affected the transition into village life
  • Moving from Vietnam to Taiwan and why the slower pace feels like a relief
  • What everyday life looks like in co-living, from shared mornings to open afternoons
  • Joining a writers group and rediscovering something meaningful along the way
  • The people and workgroups that quietly make everything come together
  • Starting to think about returning home and how to avoid slipping back into old patterns

In the next episode, Asha will talk with another family from the village to hear how their experience of Traveling Village 3 is unfolding as the journey continues.
