Each week, NZ Broadcaster and obsessive runner, Dom Harvey, speaks to cool people who identify as runners.

Episode 40: Garth Barfoot (86 year old marathon runner and Ironman triathlete)

Episode 40: Garth Barfoot (86 year old marathon runner and Ironman triathlete)

86-year-old Garth Barfoot is in London at the time of posting this (participating in the 2022 London marathon).

He has had an incredible career in real estate (Barfoot and Thompson).  But it’s through his feats in endurance running and triathlon events that I know him.

What makes Garth even more remarkable is his entry to the sport- he didn’t start competing until his late 50’s, proving it’s never too late to do something that seems impossibly hard.

Next full episode out Monday: Garth Barfoot (86 year old marathon runner and Ironman)

86-year-old Garth Barfoot is in London at the time of posting this (participating in the 2022 London marathon).

Even though he is, in his own words, a “rich lister” who can afford to sit anywhere on the plane he was flying premium economy…because he thought he’d be lonely if he didn’t sit with his friends!

Garth made his money in the real estate firm started by his father in 1923, Barfoot and Thompson.

He has had one hell of a career.  But it’s through his feats in running and triathlon that I know him.  He is a regular at endurance events like marathons (he has done the iconic Rotorua event 17 times) and Iron Man distance triathlon events.  What makes Garth even more remarkable is his entry to the sport- he didn’t start competing until his late 50’s.

Most listeners to this podcast will be younger than Garth was when he started.  I find that really cool- it means for you and me, it is NEVER too late to do something new, something courageous, something that scares the s**t out of you.

Another fun fact:  I told Garth he could park at the New World supermarket next to where I live.  He refused because he was not going to be a customer and it is a customer car park.

This tease comes from our full-length conversation which will be out Monday morning.

Bite Size:Sir John Kirwan (Talks about his length of the field try against Italy in 1987)

In this bite sized clip, taken from the full conversation with Sir John Kirwan, he explains the running training he did that lead him to score a length of the field try against Italy in the 1987 Rugby World Cup.  One of the greatest All Black tries of all time.

You can watch that incredible try right here:

If you enjoy this story, you should check out the entire conversation with JK.  It includes a few old war stories like this.  But it is chock full of tips we cann all implement to improve our mental health.

    Episode 39: Sir John Kirwan

    Episode 39: Sir John Kirwan

Sir John Kirwan is an All Black legend.  But its what he has done since retiring from sport that has made him an all-round legend.

15 years ago JK reluctantly spoke publically about his depression and mental health struggles (we discuss his reluctance in this chat- I won't tell you who pushed him into doing it!)

I’m absolutely fizzing about sharing this one- just in time for Mental Health awareness week in New Zealand- Sir John Kirwan.

Mental health has never had more chat that what it currently gets.  This guy was the trailblazer.  NOBODY really talked about this stuff publically before Sir John.

There are so many tips, tricks and tools from JK in this conversation that we can all use to improve our mental health.  We also reminisce a little bit about his time as a butcher, an All Black and a DB Bitter Warrior.

If this episode triggers anything, PLEASE chat to someone you trust. Or text 1737 anytime (NZ).  You’ll get to chat to a trained counsellor.

I’m absolutely fizzing about sharing this one- just in time for Mental Health awareness week in New Zealand- Sir John Kirwan.

Mental health has never had more chat that what it currently gets.  This guy was the trailblazer.  15 years ago JK reluctantly agreed to front a campaign talking about her personal and terrifying battle with depression and anxiety (his mum pushed him into doing it).

There are so many tips, tricks and tools from JK in this conversation that we can all use to improve our mental health.

Oh, we also reminisce a little bit about his time as a butcher, an All Black and a DB Bitter Warrior.

In this teaser clip from Monday’s episode, John recalls one of his darkest moments.

Bite Size: Nikki Kaye & Dom discuss their thoughts around being unable to have children

Bite Size: Nikki Kaye & Dom discuss their thoughts around being unable to have children

This segment comes from Mondays podcast episode.

If you want to hear more, feel free to go back and listen to the whole thing.

As well as being a fierce former NZ politician, Nikki is a breast cancer survivor.

Like me, her medical procedure left her unable to have her own biological kids.

In this snippet we share our experiences and our feeling around the sense of loss.  Nikki has a fantastic attitude and I love her positivity and her way of looking at the situation.

    Thanks for listening,  Dom
