That Black Couple Podcast Jenn and Daren

In this episode, Jenn and Daren highlight Sexual Assault and Prevention Month. In the first segment, Jenn shares how sexual assault is an unavoidable part of her Black Politics course, and Daren shares his experience watching the “Quiet On Set” documentary that exposes the mistreatment and abuse of child actors at Nickelodeon during the 1990’s.

In the second segment, Jenn and Daren dive deeper into this topic, explaining what constitutes sexual assault or harrassment. Daren shares troubling statistics about sexual assault and the pair talk about how the state and government are not setup to appropriately support and protect the most vulnerable of us. And it is no surprise when the current 2 candidates for U.S. President are known abusers. In the end, we all have a responsibility to hold each other accountable for abusing or harassing behavior.

In the third segment, Jenn and Daren discuss their personal experiences with sexual assault and harrassment. For Daren, he shared how this is a continual problem he faces as an asexual man, and Jenn shares how her most recent relationship ended due to her partner's friend assaulting her and her partner not properly protecting them or addressing the issue.

In this Rundown episode, Jenn and Daren get caught up on recent pop culture news. They start off talking about how apt it is that during Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, it appears that accused abusers like Sea “Diddy” Combs and Russell Simmons are being held accountable. While they are not advocates of the carceral system of punishment, they are fully behind restorative justice, and accountability is a cornerstone of that.

In the second segment, Jenn and Daren give updates on the political landscape, from Joe Biden’s star-studded fundraiser to Candice Owens getting fired from Daily Wire to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. In each instance, they highlight how politically misguided the country is at the moment. At a time where literal genocides are happening, a flashy fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall might look a bit tone deaf. Candice Owens has been a blight for the Black community for years, but her finding her way to Black media after being fired shows the media’s willingness to platform anybody or anything that will draw eyeballs, ears, or clicks. And when the Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed, conservative voices focused on trying to blame it on failed immigration policies or DEI, instead of mourning the loss of life and advocating for its restoration.

In the third segment, Jenn and Daren reflect on the space Shaun King and Amanda Seales take up in our culture.Shaun King has been accused of being a grifter for years, and his conversion to Islam to stand “in solidarity” with Palestinians feels like more of the same. And after Amanda Seales complained about articles pointing out that she might be getting iced out Black Hollywood because people might not enjoy working with her, it is time for folks to look at themselves in the mirror and take accountability for their actions. Everything can’t be someone else’s fault. Sometimes you create your own problems.

In this “Where Have You Been?” episode, Jenn and Daren let everyone know where they have been for the last few weeks. They start things off by talking about their recent spot in Huffington Post Black Voices series “Black Love on Our Terms,” in which they share how their relationship works and how others can use their model to find love on their own terms. They follow that up with an account of Jenn’s hospital stay and the challenges of being a Black woman in the care of modern day doctors.

In the second segment, Jenn and Daren detail how Jenn’s book tour has progressed in support of her book “Black Women Taught Us.” This isn't your regular book signing, as their events start with a practitioner grounding the space and build a conversation not just about “Black Women Taught Us,” but about the centering and honoring of Black women.

In the third segment, Jenn and Daren focus on Women’s History Month, but championing the Black women we come into contact with everyday. In “Black Women Taught Us,” Jenn models this behavior by putting the personal people in their life who have shaped who they are in conversation with more well-known names whose contributions are largely overlooked or taken for granted. Jenn and Daren encourage everyone to celebrate all the women in their lives in this same way, recognizing the role they play in keeping us alive and safe.

In the second segment, Jenn and Daren highlight the wins Black folx took home from the 2024 Grammys and Oscars, celebrating the achievements of artists such as Victoria Monet, Coco Jones, and Samara Joy. In turn they question the status of a music industry where Killa Mike wins top rap honors and Jay-Z is awarded a Dr. Dre Global Impact award. On the film side, they lament an industry still awarding Black women for playing mammies (Da’Vine Joy Randolph from “The Holdovers”), finding a home for “I Don’t Unbend My Elbows Barbie” (aka Issa Rae), and allowing Tyler Perry to continue making movies like Tyler Perry’s “Mea Culpa.”

In the third segment, they close things out on a positive note, spotlighting a recent $100M award granted to Spelman College and a donation made in the name of supporting Black college students from Lloyd & Janice Dong.

In this second part of their holiday themed episode, Jenn and Daren talk about the importance of chosen family, and not just for queer communities. With Jenn’s partner Jamelle as a guest, they share how they celebrated the holiday season together as a poly family.

In survey after survey, it shows that people, especially younger generations, are increasingly dreading going to family events. And some of the prime reasons for this are ideological differences and offensive lines of questioning. If the point of family holiday gatherings is togetherness, why do over half of Gen-Zers report having a heated argument at them? The trio share the circumstances of them having to “release people” and how fulfilling alternative celebrations have been in their lives. Moving away from traditional family and traditional structures can be difficult, but they stress how much better it was to center their own joy and happiness. It also creates an opportunity to honor the traditions that are meaningful and to build new ones.

They close things out by looking ahead and choosing a word that describes how they are moving forward into 2024.
