Marvellous!

The scope is incredible and the 20th century comes to life in this simple, colourful and very well told story. The attention to details helps build a vivid image and becomes lively rather than overwhelming. Even when the author leaves on a tangent you can only follow.

An epic history of the Twentieth Century

Mark Painter’s History of the Twentieth Century is an epic podcast. Not in terms of the production itself (which is old school and simply consists of a narrative interrupted by one piece of music per episode), but in terms of the substance.

What makes the program fantastic is the level of detail offered, the scope of the analyses (which cover everything from cultural to political, scientific and military affairs), and not least the insightful analyses of complex historical issues.

Mark Painter simply does a brilliant job covering as diverse themes as the history of flight, Russian ballet, Belgian exploitation of Congo and the outbreak of the Great War. He does so with wit, thoroughness and humanism.

I have listened to 100 episodes so far and I have made it from 1900 to 1915. I cannot wait for the next 400 or so episodes :)
