    6. Wearables - Current State of Technology

    We use numerous wearables and connected devices when working with our patients at Podium.  The science and technology in this space is rapidly evolving.  To dig into this evolution, I am joined by Chuck Hazzard.  Chuck is an entrepreneur and technology expert. He is currently working with Heads Up Health, the leading digital health analytics platform that is being used for remote patient monitoring, precision medicine, and individuals seeking to achieve peak performance.
    In the past, Chuck has designed and built computer networks, developed software applications for large corporations, helped build a successful telecommunications business from the ground up, helped a large telecommunications company develop and bring to market products and services yielding an additional $500M in annual revenue, and most recently worked with Oura Ring through their early growth years.  Chuck has extensive experience with numerous wearables, going all the way back to his testing of the first Garmin watch!

    5. Bicarbonate for Athletic Performance

    Sodium bicarbonate ( or "bicarb") is a well-researched and proven supplement when it comes to promoting athletic performance.   It is often used by the highest performing athletes, but there are barriers that keep others from trying this supplement.  Its safety is well established.  (Bicarb is just baking soda!)  However, ingesting bicarb can lead to unpleasant gastric side effects.

    In this episode, I am joined by Jeff Byers, the CEO of Amp Human.  We discuss the history of bicarb in sports and the ways it is used to improve performance.  Additionally, we delve into those side effects and a novel application of bicarb that might hold the key to harvesting the benefits while avoiding the standard side effects.

    4. Safe Supplement Use

    Supplement quality and safety is an area of considerable concern in our practice.  Due to the structure of laws in the US, there is very little oversight when it comes to supplement production.  In fact, it is probably the case that much (if not most) of the products on the market are worthless or even dangerous.

    In this episode, we talk about this very problem, but we also discuss how we navigate this market with our patients.  There are safe options out there, but it is up to the consumer be educated on the topic.

    3. Continuous Glucose Monitor Use

    Continuous Glucose Monitoring (or CGM) is a tool that we use with all of our patients at Podium, most of whom are not diabetic.  This has proven to be a very powerful means of providing instant feedback into the body's response to certain variables.  Food obviously plays a very important role in one's glucose response and metabolism, but the context around that diet is key as well.  Exercise, sleep, and stress all impact glucose response.

    In this episode we review some general use cases for CGM and talk about how we find value in these measurements for our patients.

    2. Antibiotics and Athletes

    This time of year, a large portion of our population ends up on antibiotics.  For those of us that are athletes or inclined to maintain a high level of activity, that can be detrimental.  Indeed, antibiotics can cause as many problems as they can cure.

    In the US, medical practitioners are notorious for prescribing antibiotics when there is clearly no indication to do so.  Head colds and bronchitis are almost uniformly caused by viruses.  Viruses are not the same as bacteria.  Antibiotics treat bacteria, but they do nothing for viruses.  In addition to those conditions for which antibiotics are useless, there are other illnesses which are bacterial but self-limiting.  Said another way, your body is strong enough to deal with them on its own.

    In this episode, we discuss the dangers and utility of antibiotics with a particular emphasis on how athletes and active individuals can be affected.

    COVID has dominated our lives for the past year, and now there are vaccines which are becoming widely available in the US.  Many of my patients have had questions about the vaccines and whether they should be vaccinated.  In this podcast, Patrick and I discuss  thoughts on the vaccines and how individuals should approach this decision.
